Lonzo Ball being drafted the Los Angeles Lakers this upcoming draft may not be a certainty as everyone is expecting after all.
Ball's management organized a solo workout with the Lakers this past Monday for June 7th, a move which surprised many pundits, as most predicted that Lonzo would at least work out with other top guard prospects in this year's draft, namely Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox. But just like Ball's father LaVar said, the UCLA product will be working out exclusively for the Lakers, so far anyway, as rumors are also floating around stating that Lonzo may be organizing a face to face meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers, who own the third pick, and are also awaiting the return of the 2016 number one overall pick Ben Simmons.
There may be a lot hinging on this solo workout with Los Angeles however, per Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders:
"With reports surfacing that the LA Lakers and former UCLA guard Lonzo Ball have finalized the details of a workout and face to face meeting in LA next week, there is a growing sense that unless Lonzo absolutely blows the doors off, he may not be the Lakers’ guy."
Ball and his father have both expressed their desire for Lonzo to play for the Lakers, with Lonzo growing up in Chino Hills in the heart of California.
If the Lakers do happen to not get their hands on Lonzo, by either Boston drafting him with the first pick, or passing on him with their second pick, Kentucky guard De'Aaron Fox seems like the next likely target. Fox scored 39 points for Kentucky against Ball and UCLA in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, leading the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance.
Newly-appointed president of basketball operations for the Lakers Magic Johnson has very high praise for Lonzo Ball, speaking extremely highly of him when asked about the UCLA point guard, and as of right now, is target number one for Magic and the Lakers front office.
