With salary cap commitments to James Harden, Chris Paul, Clint Capela, Eric Gordon, and PJ Tucker, there is not much the Rockets can do without clearing the deck. Daryl Morey, if he has made anything clear to us these past few weeks, is obviously willing to do that and more to improve his team's situation.
So, assuming Houston finds a way out of some of these contracts, who will they look to fill the void?
In a piece by The Athletic’s Sam Amick, he details some possible targets for the Rockets this summer -- a list that includes Danny Green, Jeremy Lamb, Al-Farouq Aminu, DeAndre Jordan, Brook Lopez, and Kevon Looney.
With the exception of Jordan and Looney (who are essentially Clint Capela-like players on cheaper deals), the Rockets' list is comprised of shooters. Danny Green, Jeremy Lamb, and Lopez would all help open up the floor for Houston and keep the ball in Harden's hands.
With the Warriors' hobbled and Durant likely to leave, the time is now for the Rockets to get their act together. While we don't know if any one of the names mentioned will be enough to get the job done, you can bet they are going to make whatever changes they can in an attempt to maximize their opportunity next season.
