Draymond Green’s name is a synonym of controversy for the things this guy can do inside and outside the court. More recently, Green made a big headline when he claimed he was the best ever defender in the game.
Following the 114-111 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 2 of the Western finals, where he had a very good performance, Green was asked by Marcus Thompson of The Athletic who he thinks is the best defender this game has seen; his reply was full of confident, but that didn’t stop fans to criticize Draymond and his statements.
“The best ever defender? Me. That’s what I believe. Wholeheartedly.”
ESPN’s The Jump echoed these statements and decided to ask the expert on this matter. Chicago Bulls legend and one of the best defensive players in the history of the league, Scottie Pippen, joined the show and even though he praised Green, made sure to be clear that he doesn’t believe he’s the greatest defender ever.
“I feel like that guy should’ve never asked that question, that’s a question that has numerous amount of answers and every player is going to give their own opinion. Draymond Green is a tremendous defender; he’s more of a great team defender than an individual defender, but I give him a lot of credit because he does a lot of things on the defense (...) but, he’s not the guy that you put on your best player, so how can he consider himself the best defender ever?
I watched him play in the finals against LeBron James, who we say is the best player in the game. I never saw him guard LeBron James.”
Pippen surely has a solid point there, as perhaps it’s a little bit early for Green to make such statements. Nevertheless, some fans actually liked the things he said and celebrate the confidence he showed. Maybe now it’s not a good time for Green to say that he’s the best of all time, but he definitely he will go down as one of the most impactful defenders that the game has witnessed when his career comes to its end.
