Now that Avery Bradley has announced that he will skip the Orlando bubble and won't play in the resumption of the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers have to explore all their options to fill in his spot.
Bradley made 49 appearances for the team this season (44 starts) and even though he was far from the level he showed during his stint with the Boston Celtics, he still gave the Lakers a two-way savvy veteran that could contribute in multiple aspects of the game.
Thus, the Lakers have to choose wisely who to sign to step up in that starting shooting guard spot and according to most reports, J.R. Smith would be their go-to-guy, considering his relationship with LeBron James. That's why Stephen A. Smith considers he'd be a great pickup for the purple and gold for the resumption of the season:
"I like this, I think that J.R Smith, believe it or not, can do almost everything that Avery Bradley could do. In some instances, even better. I like the idea of J.R. Smith being in the Los Angeles Lakers. I hope he gets the job and I can't emphasize it enough. They got a really good chemistry going on, character-wise on that team. J.R. Smith is not going to compromise it. He's actually a really, really good guy and a lot of guys in the locker room would have a lot of love and respect for him and I'll think they'll welcome him aboard and I think that's a huge plus. So I definitely support it", Stephen A. said.
Smith hasn't played competitive basketball in over a year but he's been working out on his own while waiting for his phone to ring. Certainly, he could provide better three-point shooting than Avery Bradley and an above-average backcourt defense as well, so he'd be a solid signing for the Lakers for sure.
