With Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Kelly Oubre Jr., the Phoenix Suns have a promising young core. But ahead of the 2018 Draft, the team had a much different looking plan in place that would have involved Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic and Rockets big man Clint Capela.

"One plan proposed to the Suns in the build-up to the 2018 draft: Select Doncic at No. 1 and make a free-agent run at Clint Capela to fill the C void ... especially since then-coach Igor Kokoskov had been Luka's national-team coach. Hard to resist what-ifs in the desert tonight"

It was a pretty solid plan, and they even had Luka's coach (Igor Kokosov) to go with him. But for whatever reason, Phoenix ended up passing on Luka that year, choosing instead to draft DeAndre Ayton out of Arizona with the first pick. While Ayton has not been a bad pick -- he's averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds for the season -- but he is not nearly the player Luka has become.

With a core of Booker, Doncic, and Clint Capela, the Suns would have been a team to fear. The inside-outside scoring attack likely would have been lethal to opponents.

Nevertheless, that's nothing but a "what-if" scenario now. As Luka lights up the league on a daily basis, the Suns are constantly being reminded of what they could have had. Then again, so are the other three teams that passed on him...
