Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka may very well be basketball geniuses after some of the moves they've managed to pull off after only a year and a bit in charge of the Lakers.

After an offseason that saw LA sign the best player in basketball, LeBron James, to a multi-year deal, as well as sign hungry and high-IQ veterans on one-year deals for flexibility, Los Angeles pulled off another move yesterday, waiving and stretching Luol Deng's massive contract, signed in 2016.

Due to Mitch Kupchak, the former Laker GM signed Deng, as well as Timofey Mozgov, to massive deals in the summer of 2016 in fear of pulling off no moves that offseason. The signings came back to bite LA big time, as both players barely produced on the court while they continued to eat up valuable cap space.

The Lakers finally managed to rid themselves of Deng's massive contract by waiving him, making him a free agent, and stretching out the remainder of his contract over the next several years, meaning the Lakers cap room takes less of a hit year-to-year.

And with more cap space freed up after this move, Los Angeles now has the opportunity to sign another max free agent next offseason.

Did someone say Kawhi Leonard or Jimmy Butler anyone?
