The Lakers Have An Alternative If They Can't Sign Kawhi Leonard

Fadeaway World

When Kawhi wanted out of San Antonio, teams were on and off about the decision of actually acquiring him. I mean you could say they’re crazy for not jumping onto this opportunity, but there is a lot of baggage that comes with this young superstar. Health issues and wanting to play in LA next season, it would definitely be a major risk.

Raptors traded away DeMar DeRozan, as you could say the least, the face of Toronto and young Jakob Poeltl plus a 2020 protected first round pick for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Plenty of uncertainty surrounding Kawhi Leonard if he can get back to previous form. A risky move made by Toronto GM Masai Ujiri which hopes to pay off for pretty much a one year rental of Kawhi as he is determined to opt out of his player option next season and head to LA.

There are a vast amount of big names players heading to free agency next season. Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love to name a few. However, some players that stand out the most are Golden States main core Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. I could be a potential dispatch from someone of the Golden States stars. Warriors will need to pay $300m in luxury tax to keep Durant, Klay and Green (2020). There has been rumors of Klay not willing to accept his contract extension next summer as he would lose up to $80m according to Albert Nahmad tweet.

Klay has mentioned many times he could see himself ending his career in Golden State. However, this could be a different situation next year as we could see him meet with other teams and where Golden State sees their future with him.

Klay could potentially be a likely option for the Lakers, as they could offer him a tremendous contract compared to Golden State. Also taking into account LeBron James and his Father would be very convincing. Mychal Thompson is very much respected in LA, ending his career there playing five seasons and now has become a member of the broadcasting team. Klay being one the best 3-and-D players in the league, he can be great alongside LeBron James and be a big threat to the West.
