The jokes, the memes, and the criticism continued in a non-stop spiral for the Lakers, even after they trade for Anthony Davis. Because of certain league rules, the Lakers were bashed for not executing the trade correctly, thus giving them $9 million less in cap space to work with.

Today, it seems the community owes the Lakers, and especially GM Rob Pelinka, an apology. Not only did he convince Anthony Davis to waive his $4 million trade kicker, but he also pulled off a deal that will literally clear their remaining contracts off the books.

Whether or not another max free agent is on the way, the Lakers gave themselves an extra $9 million to work with in free agency. They can split the money to build a bench, or just use it on one player and sign everyone else on veteran minimum deals.

Either way, the Lakers have put themselves in a great position entering a crucial free agency. At least for now, they have definitely earned some respect from the community and the rest of the league.
