Sports is one of the most widely discussed topics of conversation and debate known to man. Whether it be at a bar watching your favorite team play, with coworkers at lunch or with your friends. Sports bring people together, where you talk about your favorite players, past games or potential matchups.
You can go back and forth about who would do what and what the eventual outcome, it’s good fun. Here are my top 3 potential Finals matchups that I know everyone would love to see.
3. Boston Celtics vs. Houston Rockets
A strange choice you might say, but this selection makes the top three just because it would be a breath of fresh air. LeBron and his teams have represented the East for the past 6 seasons and that trend looks set to continue. In the West it’s been the either the Spurs or the Warriors dominating everyone for the past 4 years.
Seeing someone other than these three teams would be very intriguing. It would give them a chance to seize the spotlight and show us why they are worthy of being NBA Champions. Given that the Houston Rockets and the Boston Celtics are both the next best teams not mentioned it would be compelling to see two go head to head.
And it’s not like this matchup would be boring.
James Harden and Isaiah Thomas? These are two of the most exciting players in the NBA with the ability to simply amaze. Watching these two go at each other would make for a fine spectacle as they left us in awe at their offensive prowess.
Given the current state of the Celtics and the strength of Golden State and San Antonio, it's highly unlikely that this occurs. However, we can always wonder what may have been.
2. San Antonio vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Who wouldn’t salivate over another matchup between the best basketball player in the world and his coaching nemesis?
LeBron James and Gregg Popovich have met three times in the NBA Finals with Pop’s Spurs up 2-1. Every time they meet it’s a spectacle to see, pitting Popovich’s brain against LeBron’s brawn. They are two of basketball’s most revered figures who have provided more for us fans than anyone else.
This matchup would also see LeBron face the player he has the most trouble going up against; namely Kawhi Leonard. The pair of them go at each other whenever they meet and is one of the best individual rivalries in basketball.
LeBron James is the most explosive offensive talent in the league with the ability to score anywhere, at any time. Kawhi Leonard is the reigning two-time defensive player of the year and is widely considered to be the best perimeter defensive player. These clashes are the ultimate battle of offense vs defense and have produced some spectacular highlights over the years. Kawhi has also developed into one of the best offensive players in the league, averaging a career high 25.5 points per game this season.
Seeing these two battle it out for the title would an incredible thing to see and would provide another chapter in the series of LeBron vs Popovich.
1. Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
There is no doubt that this one is top of nearly everyone’s list.
A third consecutive clash between these two with the series tied a piece? This is written in stone, the matchup would be etched in basketball lore.
In 2015 the Warriors were the new kings of the West and looking to establish themselves as the top dog in the NBA. They faced a revived (but injured) Cavaliers team lead by the returning LeBron James. The Warriors won in 6.
The next season the Warriors went 73-9 becoming the best regular season team in NBA history. Steph Curry became the first unanimous MVP in league history. They again met the then healthy Cavs and the Cavs won in 7 becoming the first team in NBA history to come back for a 3-1 series deficit to win the title.
If these two were to meet for the third year in a row?
This would be a basketball war the likes of which we’ve never seen. These two teams really hate other. They don’t talk about it but they do. There’s bad blood on both sides with each team asking its own questions; Is LeBron still better than Steph? Can Steph elevate his game to make up for his failures last year? Can Kevin Durant be the difference maker? Will Kevin Love be effective unlike last year? Will we see the wrath of Draymond? Can Kyrie be as clutch?
The Warriors look set to dominate the West, the Cavs are primed to annihilate the East. In all likelihood, these two are on course to meet head-on in a crash that will send shockwaves throughout the entire sporting world.
