Oklahoma Sooners star Trae Young has been high on lottery GM's draft boards all season long, with his combination of handles and shooting stroke -- similar to that of a collegiate Steph Curry -- and has been rumored to be a top 6 pick as we approach the draft. But recent reports state that Young has undertaken a 'secret' workout with a team a little further down the draft order.
Young undertook a “secret workout” with the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 16th, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. The Cavs have Michael Porter Jr. as their number one option, however, point guard is a clear need on the roster if Porter is not available at the eight spot. 32-year-old George Hill is the only point guard listed under contract for next season and Trae Young could be a viable option to take over starting duties, or to back Hill up.
Young can be an interesting pick for the Cavs. There’s potential for him to be a star just like Curry, but it’ll take some work for him to get there, and it’s unclear if he’d be able to contribute right away if LeBron James re-signs. He could be a player teams covet if he’s available when it's their turn to pick, and the Cavs look to make a deal on draft night.
The star prospect from Oklahoma averaged 27.4 points per game on 42% FG, along with 8.9 assists this past season for the Sooners. There is no doubt that Young has the potential to be the next Steph Curry in the NBA, but if he's able to realize that potential is the biggest question mark.
