The talk of this year’s off-season was all about where LeBron James would sign up, once he agreed to a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, the attention turned to a surprising move made by DeMarcus Cousins.
DeMarcus Cousins left the New Orleans Pelicans for the back to back champions, the Golden State Warriors in a Kevin Durant style move.
Better known as Boogie, Cousins called up the Warriors GM, Bob Myers and spoke to him about potentially making the move to Golden State. According to Boogie, Bob Myers thought it was a prank call as he wrote in ‘The Player’s Tribune’.
“I called Bob Myers up.
On God, Bob thought it was a prank. He asked us like five times if we were being serious. I broke it down as clear as I could. I told him about the Pelicans and how nothing was making sense anymore. I told him it was like other teams were treating me like I didn’t have a career left after the injury.
And I said I’d take the minimum. I just wanted a team that wanted me. I was telling him: I wanted to play on the biggest stage and make the most impact I could. After that, Bob wasn’t thinking it was a prank.”
DeMarcus Cousins was happy to take a lesser amount of money to have the next part of his career in Golden State. Boogie continued to speak about how his teammates made him feel very welcomed from the get go and how the decision to move from the Pelicans was the right thing for him and his family.
It will still take a bit of time for Warriors fans to see Cousins in action for the Warriors as he still recovers from a torn Achilles. With the Warriors as the bench mark in the competition, Boogie’s move from the Pelicans puts him in a position to win his first ever championship.
