The Golden State Warriors are preparing a pitch to obtain Giannis Antetokounmpo 2021. The reigning NBA champs are anticipating the exodus of Kevin Durant this summer, and the team has their sights on Giannis, one of the best players in the NBA this season.

The report comes from Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic:

“It’s gotta be Giannis now,” wrote Thompson. “After Durant wears the crown this summer, Giannis will be the league’s next huge free-agent target, with his current Milwaukee deal set to expire in July 2021.

Curry, Giannis and Klay Thompson: that’s a viable reset if Durant leaves. It’s possible. It would first require Giannis wanting to play with the Warriors.

Tell me you didn’t get a sense he’d want this from the All-Star festivities.”

The Greek Freak bonded with Stephen Curry over the weekend, most notably slamming down an unthinkable off-the-floor alley-oop from the 2-time MVP Curry. The pair seemed to play in harmony, displaying the greatness of potential future combination.

With the departure of Kevin Durant, the Warriors will be left with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, the original three stars that began the team’s dynasty. DeMarcus Cousins is on a one year deal, and will likely leave with Durant during the offseason.

As a result, the Warriors will be looking to lure another star to the team to compliment Curry and Thompson. Who better than Antetokounmpo? The young star has led the Bucks to the best record in the league while posting MVP-type numbers. Eventually, Giannis will be tempted by the ever-successful Warriors to become part of their dynasty.

The Warriors would certainly need to make sacrifices for Antetokounmpo to join their team - potentially parting ways with Draymond Green. The team has been fortunate with player decisions and salary contracts, but they may want to plan for a realistic future, obtaining Antetokounmpo while keeping Curry and Thompson should be their main priority.

Antetokounmpo and Durant have similar playing styles, so the Bucks forward should have no problem fitting on the Warriors squad. Both players use their long reach and long bodies to have their way with defenses, utilizing their size for mismatches while being able to hit outside shots. The question is, does Giannis have the same experience as Durant?

The Warriors are preparing for the future, which is a smart move considering the rest of the league is planning their options. Free agency now days is about looking years ahead, and the Warriors are plotting on Antetokounmpo.
