Zion Williams is dreaming up some scenarios for his NBA entrance. The #1 NBA Draft prospect out of Duke says “it would be dope” to play with Durant and Irving. A scenario that he imagines can happen on the Knicks.
The Knicks have the worst record in the NBA and will more than likely get the number one pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, and they will probably select Zion Williamson.
So, how did Williams come up with the scenario? New York has been a possible landing spot for Kevin Durant for quite some time. With Durant becoming a free agent after this season, talks reignited about the 2-time NBA champion coming to the Knicks.
Kyrie Irving, on the other hand, received “We Want Kyrie” chants at Madison Square Garden the last time the Celtics played the Knicks - as recent as February 2019. With Knicks fans cheering for their team to acquire Kyrie, Zion Williams began coming with scenarios about his future team.
Would Zion Williamson be excited to play for the New York Knicks with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving? Of course.
The scenario is not out of the question. The Warriors will most likely break up after this season, prompting Durant to go elsewhere. This is no secret, as Durant’s brother made a post on Instagram implying that Durant wants to collect one more ring and leave. The question is: Are the Knicks a possible landing spot for Durant?
The Knicks are preparing their salary cap for a big signing, and Durant has shown interest in the franchise in their past. Kyrie most recently became a subject in the New York Knicks situation after being reluctant to sign with the Celtics. Knicks are apparently serious about acquiring a big name, putting off signing Kristaps Porzingis to a contract extension - even going to the length of trading him. The Knicks are preparing for something big, whether it be Durant, Irving, or both.
Zion may be onto something, but the Knicks must remain the worst team in the NBA to have a chance of getting Zion. The Knicks have the worst record in the NBA, but not by a large distance. They are only 1.5 games behind the Suns and 2 games behind the Cavs. So far, they appear to be holding onto the last spot. They would then need to win the NBA Draft lottery, where they hold a 14% chance to of winning the first pick in the draft. They would then use the pick to get Williams and possibly unfold his dream situation.
Could Williams make a contribution to the pairing of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in the New York Knicks? The Duke star is averaging 22.3 points per game along with 9.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. His defense is superb as he is averaging 2.0 blocks and 2.1 steals per game.
Regardless or not he makes a difference in the season, playing alongside Irving and Durant could help him grow and pay dividends for the rest of his career.
