When it comes to Anthony Davis, all we hear about are the Lakers and Celtics. It's true that their packages might be one of the more lucrative in the NBA. It's true that both teams (especially the Lakers) are an attractive destination for Davis.
But when it comes to the A.D. sweepstakes, there are a few other teams that could make a last minute play for him. Here are the top three dark horse trade candidates for Davis, teams willing to risk it all for a potential one-year rental.
The Trailblazers are a good team that has struggled to get over the hump. With the Lillard/McCollum duo growing old, it's getting clear that the team will need to make a move if they ever want to make significant progress in the postseason.
Davis could bring them the change they're looking for. It would likely cost them CJ McCollum, Nik Stauskas, and a few picks, but it might just be enough to seal the deal, especially if the Pelicans want to remain semi-competitive in the post-AD era.
The Bucks are another team caught in the middle. While they stand as one of the best teams in the East, they won't be the favorites come playoff time.
But with a Davis/Giannis pairing, that would all change. They'd absolutely dominate the inside. If they could fill out the rest of the roster with shooters, there wouldn't be much any team could do to stop them. Thing is, they'd have to give up some shooters to get Davis, as it would likely take a package of picks and Kris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, and Thon Maker to even get the Pels to answer the call.
The Raptors took a huge risk in their acquisition of Kawhi. They can lose him this summer and subsequently lose their contention. Anthony Davis would provide the biggest reason for Kawhi to stay.
the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors are expected to make offers. The Boston Celtics figure to be another major player in the sweepstakes, but they cannot pull off a trade until the summer unless Kyrie Irving is also moved.
The price would be high... likely involving an offer of picks, Danny Green, Nick Powell, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby. It's a really expensive get, but one that could pay off. Kawhi and Davis together would be dominant on both ends of the floor, but would also give a reason for both stars to stay in town pats the expiration date of their current deals.
