5 Best Targets For The Cleveland Cavaliers On Draft Night

Fadeaway World

Fadeaway World

The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the verge of facing a very tough offseason, as they have to be ready for the scenario that LeBron James walks away again while also trying to convince him to stay by getting top-tier players.

Anyway, they definitely need to clear some cap space, either to make room for James’ salary or to tank their way through the next season and start yet another rebuilding process around their 1st round pick.

In case James decides to stay, they need to find a way to trade away Tristan Thompson and JR Smith, who have both underperformed all year long and are due to a lot of dough for the next season. It will be very tough because of their contracts so they should use other players in the trade negotiations.

Naturally, they would like to keep Kevin Love on board is James commits to staying put, and their trade package would look something like Jordan Clarkson, Cedi Osman, Larry Nance Jr, Ante Zizic and 8th overall pick, or at least it looks like this would be their expendable assets.

But if they can land a younger superstar, they could also include Kevin Love in the trade package.

Today, we’re going to let you know about the top 5 targets they should pursue on the Draft night with this trade package.

5. Marc Gasol

Marc Gasol doesn’t want to be a part of the Memphis Grizzlies rebuild and he’s made that pretty clear, so his value may be at an all-time low right now as an aging veteran that’s definitely going to be moved at some point of the season.

Gasol is one of the best two-way players in the league and a Love-Gasol frontcourt would be extremely dynamic and entertaining to watch.

Also, Memphis would like to start the rebuilding as soon as possible and maybe the best way will be to trade Gasol and Conley this summer.

4. Andre Drummond

Andre Drummond has wasted his talents for too long with the Detroit Pistons, and now that the team has parted ways with Van Gundy and has landed Blake Griffin, perhaps they’re finally going to consider moving him in order to fix their spacing problems.

Drummond is the kind of dominant rebounder they hoped Tristan Thompson would become and even though he’s not much of an offensive factor, he’s improved a lot on the defensive side of the hardwood, and he would make doubling James on the post quite difficult due to his size and strength.

3. John Wall

John Wall is already sick and tired of not making it to the NBA Finals and he’s never going to get there unless LeBron James switches sides to the West, so playing next to the King of the Conference would be something he’d be thrilled with.

Wall is one of the best point guards in the league and the Wizards wouldn’t mind moving him and his 207+ million dollar contract, also trading away Bradley Beal to get younger and clear a lot of salary off their books by taking all these cheap contracts.

2. Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly on the verge of a separation, and the Cavs should definitely try to pull some strings in order to get the young stud to the Q and next to King James, especially while he’s still on his rookie deal.

Landing him would mean parting ways with Kevin Love and their 8th overall pick, and even though Love might not be thrilled with going back to the small market team he left 4 years ago, at least he would have a shot at playoff contention under Tom Thibodeau.

1. Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard is a lock to leave the San Antonio Spurs, and he’s probably the guy that knows how to stop LeBron James (and the Golden State Warriors) the most, so landing him would make the Cavs pretty much unbeatable.

Gregg Popovich could easily turn Zizic and Osman into studs, while they definitely need some scoring off the bench that Clarkson could provide, and the hustle and effort Nance puts on the defensive end of the hardwood, and the Spurs would finally get younger.
