5 Best Trade Packages For Donovan Mitchell: Miami Heat Could Send The Perfect Offer

5 Best Trade Packages For Donovan Mitchell: Miami Heat Could Send The Perfect Offer

Donovan Mitchell has been one of the top shooting guards in the NBA for a while now because he is a highly explosive player with improved offensive skills. Thanks to his ability to create his own shots and come up big in crunch time, Mitchell’s stock has risen across the NBA over the past few seasons. Under the shooting guard’s leadership, the Utah Jazz has consistently been a playoff contender even though championship success has not followed. Following Utah’s disastrous exit from the playoffs this season, there need to be changes in the organization. Reports have not stopped coming out about the Jazz wanting to split Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, two players that have seemingly been beefing for years.

But in fact, it might be Donovan Mitchell who could be the one to force changes. After suffering through multiple playoff blunders and not enjoying success alongside his co-star Rudy Gobert, Mitchell could be out the door. This was further accentuated by a report by Marc Berman of The New York Post:

“The Jazz are contemplating breaking up the Mitchell-Rudy Gobert tandem that’s been a solid playoff entrant but not potent enough to get to a Western Conference Finals. The Knicks — and several other teams — are monitoring Mitchell’s situation to see if he asks for a trade. Snyder said in a release the Jazz need “a new voice.’’ Mitchell, who is from Westchester, was noncommittal after the Jazz’s playoff ouster. League sources believe Mitchell eventually will request a trade, but it might not be until next summer.”

Clearly, the shooting guard is fed up with losing in the playoffs and he only has 3 All-Star appearances to show for his efforts as he approaches 26 years old. The young man needs to focus on his future because spinning the wheel endlessly in Utah is not the best situation for a player who believes he can be the best player on a championship team. That remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that a shooting guard that can average 25 PPG with ease is not easy to find. The fact that Quin Snyder stepped down and the number of reports that keep coming out could spell the end of Mitchell in Utah, and there could be a host of teams that would jump on a deal.

It is time to discover the best available trade packages for 3-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell. The Utah Jazz will likely have to lose at least one of Mitchell or Gobert, but the former could give the franchise valuable assets to rebuild their roster for the future. Here are the five best trade packages that teams could put together to pry Mitchell away from the Utah Jazz.

Atlanta Hawks

Donovan Mitchell Atlanta Hawks

Trade Package: John Collins, De’Andre Hunter, Jalen Johnson, 2023 First-Round Pick for Donovan Mitchell

The Atlanta Hawks are not going to rest with their team barely making the playoffs and losing in the first round. They have a superstar offensive player in Trae Young, and the miniature guard needs plenty of help to make a difference in a stacked Eastern Conference that features the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics among others. To do so, the Hawks should go after Mitchell by giving up two starters and talented forward Jalen Johnson. The Jazz needs to rebuild around talented young players who can score and defend, and the Hawks’ package delivers that.

Mitchell and Young would be an exciting duo to watch because both are quick and explosive, and also have the ability to score 25 or 30 points with relative ease. Young, without the presence of another All-Star, managed numbers of 28.4 PPG and 9.7 APG and giving him another scoring option would take his assist numbers to another level. The Hawks cannot afford to ride on the back of Young every season, because even if his numbers are extremely solid, his efficiency is suffering (4.0 turnovers per game). To make a difference, the Hawks need Mitchell on board with Young and Clint Capela.

Meanwhile, Mitchell gets the best point guard he has ever played with and a team that also features talented players in a defensive-minded Capela and shooters including Bogdan Bogdanovic. For Utah, the franchise rebuilds with two starting-caliber players in Collins and Hunter who are both under 25 years old. Jalen Johnson has a high ceiling, and he could benefit by getting more minutes on a rebuilding franchise.

New York Knicks

Donovan Mitchell

Trade Package: Evan Fournier, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, 2023 First-Round Pick, 2023 First-Round Pick, 2025 First-Round Pick, 2026 First-Round Pick for Donovan Mitchell

There is no doubt about it, big markets attract the best players in the league, because of the media attention, fame, and impact a player can have. Donovan Mitchell is certainly a box-office type of player because of his tremendous explosiveness and scoring ability. Utah is a nice market, but it isn’t New York, and the Knicks will always be in the mix for All-Stars should they come available. The Knicks also present an interesting situation for Mitchell, because they have won one playoff series in 22 years, and need a savior. Mitchell could be their hero.

Donovan Mitchell has something to work with in RJ Barrett and Julius Randle, both players who have All-Star potential. The Knicks could form somewhat of a Big Three to try to push for deeper playoff runs, something the shooting guard desperately wants. Of course, the NBA is a better place when the Knicks are playing well. The franchise would have to give up a veteran, two young players, and a host of first-round picks, basically mortgaging their future for the presence of a 3-time All-Star shooting guard. Considering Mitchell is only 26, the Knicks should jump at this deal because their core trio could contend for the next 7 years at least.

Utah completely rebuilds with a host of first-round picks, as Fournier will be considered expendable. The Jazz has a chance to rebuild through the draft, something most teams need to do to get back on top. The Mitchell and Gobert experiment has failed countless times, and changes need to be made from Utah’s side. Giving Mitchell the best chance to make a difference in the NBA by being the Knicks’ savior could be the storyline NBA fans and media members want to follow during the 2023 season and beyond. Luckily, it could happen because Mitchell has reportedly been scouted by the New York Knicks:

"Around the NBA, it’s an open secret that the Knicks are targeting Utah’s Donovan Mitchell, who has New York roots and connections to Knicks front-office executives through their time at CAA."

Clearly, the Knicks are high on Mitchell and are willing to provide a massive trade package to lure the guard from the Utah Jazz. Stay tuned, because this story could continue to develop throughout the offseason.

San Antonio Spurs

Donovan Mitchell San Antonio Spurs

Trade Package: Keldon Johnson, Joshua Primo, Josh Richardson, Doug McDermott, 2023 First-Round Pick, 2025 First-Round Pick, 2026 First-Round Pick for Donovan Mitchell

The San Antonio Spurs are in complete rebuild mode, and they have a franchise cornerstone in Dejounte Murray already. The guard is a solid defender, improving playmaker, and capable go-to option who can also rebound the ball at a high level. Due to Murray’s versatility, the Spurs can finally build on something for the first time since Kawhi Leonard was in town. The next possible option for San Antonio would be acquiring Donovan Mitchell to create an All-Star backcourt. Remember, Murray made his first All-Star Team last year and should be in the mix for more selections going forward.

Murray and Mitchell would be an exciting duo on both ends of the floor, as young players with the ability to carry the team into the playoffs again. Mitchell can also benefit from the presence of Gregg Popovich, still one of the best coaches in the NBA. By picking Pop’s brain and also competing with a renowned franchise in the Spurs, Mitchell could focus purely on basketball and improving as a player. Of course, we don’t know if that is what the player wants, as bigger markets have been on his mind. But for basketball reasons, joining the Spurs is never the wrong option, even as they continue to rebuild. The Spurs always find a way to get back to respectability, and Mitchell could help them get back there.

San Antonio would have to give up two talented young players, two veterans, and 3 first-round picks to make this happen. That is quite a haul for Utah, who can focus on their rebuild immediately and also continue to develop Johnson and Primo who are two bundles of talent. Neither player is as good as Mitchell, but paired with first-round picks could be an intriguing trade package available right now. Playing in a smaller market in San Antonio might not be Donovan’s main choice, but the Jazz can control where the shooting guard goes and the prospect of acquiring Johnson could be what they want.

Philadelphia 76ers

Donovan Mitchell Philadelphia 76ers

Trade Package: Tyrese Maxey, Matisse Thybulle, Tobias Harris, 2024 First-Round Pick, 2025 First-Round Pick for Donovan Mitchell

The Philadelphia 76ers want to go all-in with Joel Embiid as their main star, a reason why they brought on board James Harden who is clearly past his prime. But the duo looked impressive on the court at times, although they will need a third star to give Harden the ability to step back into the 3rd offensive option role. The Beard is no longer a go-to scorer, as years of carrying the Houston Rockets have taken a toll on his legs. If the 76ers acquire Mitchell, they are right in the mix with the Bucks and Celtics to reach the NBA Finals. With other team has two All-Star guards and arguably the best big man in the league?

To do so, the 76ers need to part ways with the beloved Tyrese Maxey and two other key players in Mattisse Thybulle and Tobias Harris. That is a trio of players who can defend, score, and hustle for points, but neither of them is as good as Mitchell. It is widely known that general manager Daryl Morey loves going after stars, and he would do this deal in a heartbeat if it means getting the approval of Mitchell long-term. A Big Three of Embiid, Mitchell, and Harden would be scary to play against because either player can get a good look for themselves or their teammates at any time.

Also, the best way to unlock James Harden would be to give him the role of a facilitator and third offensive option. The 76ers would have to get creative to build the roster around the three stars, as they would lose quite a bit of depth with this deal. Philadelphia also gave up two quality players in Andre Drummond and Seth Curry in the James Harden deal, so the roster will need to be filled out. But Utah wouldn’t mind Maxey coming on board, because he has All-Star potential and this deal could be in the cards.

Miami Heat

Donovan Mitchell

Trade Package: Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Gabe Vincent, 2023 First-Round Pick for Donovan Mitchell

By far, the best available package for both franchises and for Mitchell himself would come courtesy of the Miami Heat. Out of all the available trade packages, Tyler Herro is the best player that could be offered for Mitchell because he is only 22 years old and won Most Improved Player after taking his scoring average to 20.7 PPG. Quite frankly, the main reason the Miami Heat did not make the NBA Finals was that Herro was injured during the Eastern Conference Finals. Herro was the go-to scorer for the Heat throughout the year, and he looks primed for a maximum contract.

Miami wants to win right now, and swapping Herro for Mitchell could get them there. Herro has a very high ceiling, but he is not where Mitchell is right now. A Big Three of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Donovan Mitchell would almost guarantee a Finals appearance, especially if Kyle Lowry returns to his best shape. Teams need stars to win games, and as the Eastern Conference continues to get better with the likes of the Philadelphia 76ers chasing the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, the Heat need to stand out from the rest of the pack. Rather than giving Herro the max and sticking with him, they could engage in a sign-and-trade to ship off the shooting guard to Utah along with capable point guard Gabe Vincent and sharpshooter Duncan Robinson. A first-round pick would be needed to sweeten the deal. If losing Mitchell would mean they get a future All-Star in return, the Jazz might have to accept this deal.

Mitchell also gets his chance to play in a big market in Miami with two other All-Stars. The days of an All-Star wanting to win his way is over, as teaming up with other players is the best way to build a resume on winning and championships. Unfortunately, NBA fans are only looking at resumes when discussing all-time great players, which means superteam championships are considered just as valuable as championships won the “old-fashioned way”. Mitchell needs to compete for championships, and getting a chance to play for the Heat alongside head coach Erik Spoelstra and superstar Jimmy Butler would be a blockbuster storyline.
