Well, nobody saw this one coming... or, at least, not so soon.
When reports surfaced earlier today of Kristaps Porzingis' heated meeting with the Knicks, we all assumed it might lead to the young forward being dealt at some point. That moment is here, and it could shake things up in the NBA.
The trade will see Porzingis, Courtney Lee, and Tim Hardaway Jr sent to Dallas in exchange for Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., and DeAndre Jordan.
Most importantly, it will open up about $74.6 million in cap space for the Knicks next season, enough for two max salary slots. Obviously, this trade is a play by them to make some major signings in July, where they are said to have interest in Klay, Durant, Kyrie, and Kawhi.
For the Mavericks, it trades veterans for young players. Most notably, Kristaps, who should be a perfect fit next to Luka.
With the NBA trade deadline fast approaching, this deal may cause other dominoes to fall around the association. No doubt, it will be an interesting couple of days as we find out what this deal means for both teams, the players, and the perspective decisions of players to come in a few months.
