NBA Trade Rumors: Charlotte Hornets Interested In Andre Drummond

According to a league executive, the Charlotte Hornets have emerged as contenders to acquire Pistons big man Andre Drummond. Here is what he told Sean Deveney of

“He’ll be a priority there. It’s just a matter of whether they make him a priority now and give up something to get him or try to make the move later. It’s a very cautious group, Mitch Kupchak and those guys. But they might want to get this guy into the fold sooner rather than later, there’s just a lot of incentive there on both sides.”

Detroit has not yet considered moving on from Drummond or their franchise face, Blake Griffin. But with a 4-10 start to the season and nothing to indicate things will change, that mindset could change.

Charlotte will have cap space this summer, with Bismack Biyombo, Marvin Williams and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist—players making $45 million this season—coming off the books. They could offer Drummond a deal this summer.

Of, if they want to try their luck now in an effort to make a playoff push, they have enough assets to trade for him now. Some combination of Biyombo, Williams, and Kidd-Gilchrist would match with Drummond’s $27 million salary for this season. A couple of first-round picks should be included to sweeten the deal.

It may seem like a longshot now, but the Pistons' decreasing trajectory could make this scenario a reality by February. It'll be interesting to see how things develop this season.
