When news hit that LeBron James would not be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2026-27 season, it sent shockwaves throughout the NBA. Many teams have been named as possible destinations for the four-time champion. Still, that list is now reportedly down to five: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
In an interview earlier today, NBA insider Shams Charania gave some insight into how soon LeBron might make his decision.
“Every day LeBron James inches closer and closer to a decision,” Charania said. “It’s decision time for LeBron James. All the information, for the most part, is in.
“GMs, presidents, owners- they’ve all been heard from; they are continuing to have conversations with agent Rich Paul this week. Players have also reached out to LeBron James to recruit him.
“Yes, all the voice notes have also been listened to. And rosters have been set around the league, decks have been set, and the leading suitors have been Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia, and Minnesota.
“What we know definitively is that LeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere where he can compete for a championship. Somewhere where he finds that happiness from a team environment and culture that he feels he can uplift.
“And the big thing is this is not going to be a financially driven decision. So, that gives LeBron James the ability to hear from teams that have the minimum, have exceptions, and have salary cap space as well. And also be able to take his time with this decision.”
Most fans want to see LeBron return to Cleveland and finish his career where it all began. The Cavaliers already have a strong roster that could benefit from his veteran leadership. However, there has been some speculation that the four-time NBA champion may not sign with Cleveland if James Harden is on the team.
That rumor was debunked by NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
“I can tell you specifically about LeBron and James Harden,” Scoop B said. “The way it was told to me over the weekend was, and this is a family show, LeBron and James ‘F’ with each other.”
This statement will certainly make Cavs fans breathe a sigh of relief, but there is more news circulating today that likely won’t make them happy. According to reporter Alex Schiffer of Front Office Sports, Western Conference general managers believe LeBron is going to choose a team out West over Cleveland.
That team is the Golden State Warriors.
The rumor of LeBron possibly playing alongside Stephen Curry on the Warriors began in 2024, when the two superstars were teammates on Team USA. After winning the Olympic gold medal, LeBron gave Curry high praise and said he was happy to finally be his teammate.
“I was super excited to be able to finally team up with him in a win-or-die type atmosphere,” LeBron said. “That’s what it was, being a part of the Olympics. It was everything that I dreamed of and aspired to, to be a part of that team, along with Steph.
“Great memories. Something that I’ll remember from my basketball career for the rest of my life, for sure.”
Once LeBron made it clear he was leaving the Lakers, the Warriors were one of the first teams mentioned as a landing spot. Golden State is also very interested in King James.
First, Draymond Green made a pitch for LeBron to join the Warriors. Now, Curry reportedly made a convincing pitch to King James during the American Century Championship golf tournament about coming to the Golden State.
The Warriors can make some moves that would free up $6 million for LeBron to sign with them. This was detailed by ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
“Barring trading Moses Moody’s $12.5 million contract, Golden State has the $3.9 million veterans exception available to offer James,” Marks said.
“A Moody trade would put the Warriors $38 million below the first apron hard cap. If Draymond Green signed in the $20 million to $22 million range, the Warriors would then have the flexibility to sign players to the veteran’s minimum and still offer $6 million to James.”
As of now, we still don’t know where LeBron will end up. It’s looking more and more like he’ll finally make his dream come true by playing alongside Curry rather than against him. Or he could return home to Cleveland for the storybook ending most fans want to see.
Ultimately, LeBron wants to have fun and join a team where he feels he can make the biggest impact. According to his agent, Rich Paul, he isn’t chasing another championship.
The ball is in LeBron’s hands, and hopefully, we’ll soon know where he’ll play during the 2026-27 NBA season.
