As NBA legend LeBron James settles on a final destination this summer, a few surprise teams have made a strong recruiting push. Besides the Cavaliers, Heat, and Warriors, we’ve seen teams like the Nuggets, Timberwolves, and 76ers get involved in the ongoing sweepstakes.
Now, according to the latest update by Alex Golden, the Indiana Pacers are also a potential (albeit longshot) option. They may not seem ideal at first, but they check all the boxes for what LeBron is looking for at this stage of his career. Best of all, he’d get to play alongside star point guard Tyrese Haliburton.
“The mechanics are surprisingly straightforward from a purely cap-management perspective,” wrote Alex Golden of Sports Illustrated. “The Pacers do not need to clear a massive salary from the books or orchestrate a blockbuster trade. If LeBron truly prioritizes winning over salary and wants to join Indiana, the numbers show there is a legal path to making it happen.”
Haliburton, 26, missed the entire 2025-26 campaign after tearing his Achilles in the NBA Finals. Still, when healthy, he’s one of the best guards in the league with averages of 17.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game on 47.3% shooting and 38.8% shooting from three.
While he has no direct ties to LeBron, there have been signs of a developing relationship. Notably, Haliburton is scheduled to co-host the ‘Mind the Game’ podcast later this month, which is interesting timing given LeBron’s current situation.
Nevertheless, it’s a mystery which way James is leaning. While the Pacers are at a major disadvantage compared to bigger markets that offer familiarity (among other things), there are still plenty of reasons to join. If LeBron is truly focused on winning, he could do that with a Pacers team that’s just two years removed from an NBA Finals run. Alongside Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, and Ivica Zubac, James could be the missing link that helps them reclaim their place at the top of the East.
On the Pacers, LeBron would not be a background character. He would be a core part of the team, taking his place in the starting lineup and acting as a leader/mentor for younger teammates. If the Pacers somehow won the title under his watch, James would be celebrated like a hero of the franchise, further enhancing his legacy as someone who won five championships on four different teams. Plus, unlike other teams, the Pacers would not have to go out of their way to fit LeBron. They could essentially sign him for free, making things that much easier for everyone involved. The Pacers could even bring Bronny James along for the ride, assuming they waive or trade Quenton Jackson in the process.
Ultimately, the Pacers cannot be put on the same tier as the top teams in the James sweepstakes, but they are lurking as a potential destination that would shock the world. It’d be a move nobody saw coming, but one that could pay off greatly for the King. Only he can say for sure what aspects he’s looking for in his next team, but LeBron could do a lot worse than joining the Indiana Pacers this summer.
