The NBA free-agent market is currently at a standstill as the basketball world waits on LeBron James‘ next decision. At 41 years old, he remains one of the league’s most valuable additions, and at least 12 teams have expressed interest over the past few weeks alone.

So far, it’s been nothing but silence from James’ camp, and new reports indicate that this process could drag on for several more weeks. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, LeBron is in no rush to make up his mind as he spends his offseason with friends and family in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

“LeBron James, Rich Paul, they’re continuing to sift through the leading contenders, the different options, different teams that have been pitching Rich Paul over the past week,” reported Shams Charania. “That includes Golden State, Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia, and Minnesota. What we do know is that LeBron James wants to be in a competitive environment. As far as the timeline, there is no timetable. He does not appear to be in a rush, and the last couple of weeks have been a lot of family, friends, and golf for LeBron James. He’s spent time in the Akron area with his close friends and family, and that includes Brandon Weems, his longtime childhood friend, who is now a leading executive with the Cleveland Cavaliers.”

The same three teams remain at the top (Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers), but the landscape for James has shifted from where it started weeks ago. Notably, the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves are being increasingly seen as underdogs in the sweepstakes. There’s also the Warriors, who would be seen as a long shot for James if not for his upcoming meeting with Draymond Green.

“The golf and the family time are continuing this week,” Shams added. “But another friend he’s going to be spending some time with is Draymond Green. He is also a free agent right now, and he declined his $7.7 million player option to try and give the Warriors increased flexibility to go after LeBron James as a free agent, potentially bringing in another co-star like Anthony Davis.”

As an unrestricted free agent, Draymond Green likely opted out of his contract to help the Warriors maintain flexibility for LeBron, but it might not be enough if they don’t also trade for Davis. Nevertheless, Curry is excited about a potential pairing, even though we still don’t know which way he’s leaning.

At this point, besides the race being dwindled down to five teams, there’s so much we don’t know. But as LeBron continues to live it up in Akron (with golf and family time), teams are actively making a case to convince him to sign, proving that his future is still up for grabs. More than anything, LeBron is looking for a place where he can play meaningful basketball, and his decision will likely come down to where he feels most confident about competing for a championship.

Of course, if there’s one team to beat in this race, it’s the Cavaliers. Besides being closest to home for the basketball legend, it’s the team where his career began back in 2003, and the place he won a championship in 2016. With so much to offer LeBron, they seem like the best natural fit, but there’s just no way to know how he feels about it until he makes his official decision.
