NBA Insider Brian Windhorst thinks the Miami Heat have emerged as the most logical destination for LeBron James, ahead of his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers.
Speaking on the Hoop Collective podcast, Windhorst said that he wasn’t reporting inside information but rather sharing his own perspective after following the entire situation closely and speaking to people around the league.
“Look, I’m just going to say I have no insight. I have no information. You know that I’m from Cleveland. You know my ties there. The more I’ve looked at this, and the more I’ve had conversations, the more Miami makes sense to me. Now, when I hear him thinking about a couple of years, it makes even more sense to me. Because I think that’s where he goes and fits. He can go there and have the ball. He also can go there and be protected on defense.”
“In Cleveland, he can be protected on defense for sure, but he wouldn’t have the ball. I want to be clear. You think I don’t think he can play with anybody? He can do anything. I don’t see him playing with Donovan and Harden as being a clean fit. Of course he can do it. I just don’t see that clean fit. The fit in Miami makes more sense to me.”
“I’ve come to that as I’ve watched this unfold for the last three weeks and had a bunch of conversations. I’m not trying to cause any problems. I’m not trying to report anything. I’m just telling you my perception.”
Windhorst makes excellent points in picking the Heat as the best situation for LeBron.
The Cavaliers already have Donovan Mitchell and James Harden running their offense. Even though LeBron showed last year he can be effective as the third option and playing off the ball with the Los Angeles Lakers, his biggest strength comes when he has the ball in his hands.
And the Heat can offer him that. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo are not ball-dominant stars, and LeBron can go back to initiating the offense. They also provide defensive cover for him, which addresses the part of LeBron’s game that has naturally declined over the years.
Windhorst also expanded on that thought during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, where he discussed the Heat publicly recruiting LeBron.
According to Windhorst, Heat president Pat Riley used Giannis Antetokounmpo’s arrival to send a message to LeBron.
“Look, he’s celebrating Giannis Antetokounmpo, but at the same time actively recruiting LeBron James. This is what’s going on with this particular free agency that LeBron’s doing. The teams are actively saying it publicly because they don’t get private conversations with him. There’s nothing that Pat Riley can say about the Heat that LeBron doesn’t already know.”
“But the fact that he is taking this opportunity while welcoming Giannis to appeal to LeBron is an indication of, A, how badly the Heat want him, and B, that this entire operation is rolling out in public with the teams in the dark. I think Miami can make a compelling case. If LeBron wants to play the type of basketball that is more comfortable to him, where he has the ball, the Heat are the team that is the fit for that.”
“Now, I don’t know whether that’s important to him. I don’t know whether the way he played in Los Angeles last year is something he doesn’t want to do because he won’t tell us. But if they want to play like he has always played for 23 years, Miami makes some sense. Plus, Giannis and Bam Adebayo provide the defensive cover. Again, if he’s going to play multiple years, it would give the Heat time to build this roster up. So that’s a factor as well.”
The Heat have made their case to LeBron, and they want him back. They believe LeBron is the missing piece to their puzzle, and he could very well be. LeBron could thrive with the ball in his hands alongside two dominant big men, and he wouldn’t have to place as much emphasis on defense with those two towering defenders behind him.
Ultimately, Windhorst explained that he isn’t predicting where LeBron will sign. The Heat, Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors have all made their pitches to LeBron as the NBA waits for his decision.
But based on roster fit, playing style, and a long-term outlook, Windhorst thinks the Heat have become the team that makes the most sense.
With Giannis and Bam anchoring the defense, Pat Riley actively recruiting him, and the chance for LeBron to remain the primary ball-handler, the Heat may offer the clearest path for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer as he prepares for the final chapter of his career.
