It looks like it is time for the Detroit Pistons to start a rebuild. The Pistons are currently 6 games under .500 and haven’t shown that they are capable of contending with the top teams.
With Andre Drummond, assuming he declines his player option, Reggie Jackson, and Langston Galloway all set to become free agents at the end of the season, it would make sense to try and trade them to acquire young pieces.
Their biggest trade piece is Blake Griffin who, despite regressing this season, is one of the best power forwards in the league and was an All-NBA player last season. Here are 5 teams who could look to trade for Blake Griffin.
Trade Package: Kelly Oubre Jr, Tyler Johnson, First-Round Pick For Blake Griffin
The Phoenix Suns have been one of the most surprising teams to start the year and adding Blake Griffin would help them tremendously as they look to make the playoffs this season. The Suns have surprised a lot of people this year and got off to a hot start but, they have since cooled down.
After starting the season off 6-3, the Suns are just 3-7 in their last 10 games. The biggest issue for the Suns as of late has been injuries as key veterans Aron Baynes and Ricky Rubio have each missed time. Not to mention, this team has been without Deandre Ayton over the last 18 games due to league violations. A potential Blake Griffin trade could be the thing that turns this season around for them.
A potential trade could be Blake Griffin for Tyler Johnson, Kelly Oubre Jr., and a heavily protected future first-round pick. For the Pistons, this trade allows you to rebuild. Kelly Oubre would be a great co-teammate alongside Luke Kennard for the future. This trade also gets Blake’s contract off the books and would make it easier to trade Drummond.
For the Suns, Blake Griffin helps you in a multitude of ways. Griffin would be a great co-teammate alongside Devin Booker and is a guy who can give you 20-plus points, 5-plus rebounds, and 4-plus assists on a nightly basis. Trading Kelly Oubre also clears the way for either Mikal Bridges or Cam Johnson to be inserted into the starting lineup. Mikal has struggled so far but Blake Griffin would make it easier for not only him, but the entire team to score as he is another person for opposing teams to pay attention to.
Trade Package: Dwyane Bacon, Marvin Williams, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Second-Round Pick For Blake Griffin
Similar to the Phoenix Suns, the Hornets have been one of the most surprising teams to start the year and Blake could be the player who can lead them to the playoffs. After an off-season in which they lost Kemba Walker and then proceeded to sign Terry Rozier to a questionable contract, many expected the Hornets to bottom out and be the worst team in the league but, so far, they have silenced the critics. This start to the season is due in part to great coaching and play by guards Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier as well as good play from 2019 draftee, P.J. Washington.
A potential Blake Griffin trade would be Blake Griffin and a future 2nd-round pick for Marvin Williams, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Dwyane Bacon. For the Pistons, this trade would start the rebuild and get Blake’s contract off the books. MKG, Monk, and Bacon would be nice young pieces that could help accelerate the rebuild or players who could be used as trade pieces.
For the Hornets, as stated, Blake Griffin would help lead this team to the playoffs. It seems as if the Hornets are missing a go-to player and Blake would be that for you. He would also make it easier for the young players to score and would have his minutes cut down with the emergence of P.J. Washington. The Hornets aren’t a hot commodity in free agency so the only way for them to get star players would be for them to trade for them.
Trade Package: Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, Jalen Brunson, Second-Round Pick For Blake Griffin
Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have been on a tear and a trade like this would be an aggressive move that could potentially make them contenders. The Mavs are currently overachieving as not many people have expected them to be this good. Luka has been on a tear so far this year but, the Mavs haven’t had anyone step up outside of Luka and Blake would be a great co-teammate alongside Luka and Kristaps Porzingis.
A potential trade would be Blake Griffin in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, Jalen Brunson, and a second-round pick.
For the Pistons, this move would start a rebuild and get Blake’s contract off the books.
For the Mavs, Blake Griffin helps you in a multitude of ways. Griffin gives you added scoring, rebounding, and playmaking while also bringing a veteran presence to the roster.
Adding Blake would form a formidable duo in the frontcourt with Kristaps. This season, Kristaps has yet to hit his stride and playing the center position could be the change that he needs to turn this season around. With the attention that Blake draws, this should lead to more open shots for Kristaps and the rest of the team.
Portland Trail Blazers
Trade Package: Hassan Whiteside, Anfernee Simmons, First-Round Pick for Blake Griffin
The Trail Blazers have been off to a disappointing start and trading for Blake Griffin could be the move that turns this season around. After making it to the Western Conference Finals last season, many expected the Blazers to a surefire bet to make it to the playoffs. The reason for this slow start has been getting rid of their valuable veteran players. Guys like Seth Curry, Meyers Leonard, Moe Harkless, and Al-Farouq Aminu were all vital pieces to their success but they let all of them go in free agency.
A potential Blake Griffin trade would be Anfernee Simons, Hassan Whiteside, and a future heavily protected first-round pick in exchange for Blake Griffin. This trade gives the Blazers another offensive threat and a potential 2nd-option on this team. The Blazers recently added Carmelo Anthony and he has been killing it for them so far.
Adding Blake would be the aggressive move that can put them back into the playoff race. Adding Blake opens the floor up for everyone else and a starting lineup of Damian Lillard-C.J. McCollum-Carmelo Anthony-Blake Griffin-Jusuf Nurkic (when he becomes healthy) would be one of the best in the league.
Trade Package: Gordon Hayward, Marcus Smart For Blake Griffin
Trading for Blake Griffin would the aggressive move that could put the Celtics over the hump. The Boston Celtics have been one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference so far this season. Despite their 15-5 record, the Celtics have seemed to cool off and are just 6-4 in their last 10 games. This recent stretch looks to be caused by Gordon Hayward’s injury.
Hayward started off the season hot and was a great 4th option for this team. He was able to take the pressure off of Kemba Walker and the young guys in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Now, without his presence, that is just one less player that defenses have to focus on and with his injury history, it may be time to move on from him.
A potential Blake Griffin trade would be Gordon Hayward and Marcus Smart in exchange for Blake Griffin. With Hayward, his injury history makes him expendable. It may seem ironic to get rid of Hayward due to injuries and Blake is injury-prone himself but, Blake is a much better player than Hayward is. Brad Wanamaker makes Marcus Smart somewhat expendable and this move would move Tatum back to his natural position at the Small Forward position and Brown back to the Shooting guard position. These position changes could create potential mismatches for opponents and having Blake as a 4th-option is a blessing in itself.
