As a league, the NBA has a fair amount of superstar trades. The most recent one has been the James Harden trade, where James Harden moved to the Brooklyn Nets to create a superteam. If we look back a little further, there are other superstars that moved teams via trade: Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard are some semi-recent examples.
In the NBA anything could happen. Players are always on the move, and there is always the potential for a superstar trade to happen. There are lots of teams that will be looking to improve this summer and try to compete for a championship, which means they could choose to acquire a star. With that being said, here are some blockbuster trades that could happen this offseason.
5. Kristaps Porzingis To The Boston Celtics
Boston Celtics Receive: Kristaps Porzingis
Dallas Mavericks Receive: Kemba Walker, Payton Pritchard, Robert Williams, a future first-round pick, a future second-round pick.
Kristaps Porzingis is currently with the Dallas Mavericks, but during this offseason, he could potentially get traded. Porzingis' name has been involved in trade rumors before, and there are plenty of teams that would want to add the Latvian to their squad. One of those teams could be the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics need to do something to improve their roster, as they have disappointed this season. Perhaps Kristaps Porzingis could be a solid addition, as he would add a star-caliber big man to the Boston Celtics, and would provide more star power next to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for next season.
The Dallas Mavericks would receive a package with Kemba Walker who was an All-Star with the Boston Celtics last season, and two young prospects in Payton Pritchard and Robert Williams. Kemba Walker would provide some perimeter shot creation next to Luka Doncic. Robert Williams would immediately slot in as the starting center. Robert Williams has shown some promise with the Celtics, and perhaps more minutes could help him continue to develop. Payton Pritchard is a solid rookie who can shoot well and distribute the ball. The two future picks would help the Mavericks build around Doncic. It seems like this trade package could work for both teams.
4. Russell Westbrook To The New York Knicks
New York Knicks Receive: Russell Westbrook
Washington Wizards Receive: Frank Ntilikina, Obi Toppin, Kevin Knox, two future first-round pick
Russell Westbrook is a superstar on the Washington Wizards, who are a team that's 13th in the Eastern Conference currently. As the Wizards are a losing team currently, perhaps they could trade Russell Westbrook away this offseason in order to get some future assets in return. Russell Westbrook could bring in another veteran to the New York Knicks this offseason. Having Westbrook in Madison Square Garden would bring excitement for New York Basketball, and the last MVP who played in their prime for the Knicks was Willis Reed. After 51 years, the New York Knicks could bring in an MVP to the roster that is at the peak of their powers.
The New York Knicks would send the Wizards a package loaded with prospects and some picks. Frank Ntilikina is a defensive specialist, who could eventually become a solid point guard on offense. Obi Toppin is one of their recent draft picks, but it is unlikely he gets significant minutes in New York with Julius Randle being an All-Star. Obi Toppin flashed some solid potential in college, and perhaps the Wizards would be where he unlocks it. Kevin Knox is a solid floor spacer right now (41% from 3PT Range), and could further develop on offense. The Wizards would get a lot of assets for a former MVP while letting Westbrook go play on a playoff team like the New York Knicks.
3. Karl-Anthony Towns To The Golden State Warriors
Golden State Warriors Receive: Karl-Anthony Towns
Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Kelly Oubre Jr. (sign and trade), James Wiseman, Eric Paschall, Alen Smailagic, 2021 Minnesota Timberwolves pick (if outside 1-3 range)
Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best centers in the league, but he has only been to the playoffs once. If he requests a trade from the Timberwolves, then he could potentially go to a destination where he could team up with another star. That potential destination could be the Golden State Warriors. Towns' outside shooting would be perfect for Golden State's system, and his life would be made a lot easier due to the defensive attention that teams direct towards Stephen Curry.
Kelly Oubre Jr. is a free agent, but he could elect to accept a sign-and-trade if it sends him to a favorable destination. The Timberwolves would be a team that could offer Oubre a lot of usage, and that could be enticing for a young player, especially with a big contract to boot. To get a superstar of Towns' caliber, the Warriors would have to send out some of their other young prospects: those players would include Alen Smailagic, Eric Paschall, and James Wiseman. Wiseman and Paschall in particular have flashed their potential, and the Timberwolves would be a place where they could develop with consistent minutes. The Warriors would also give the Timberwolves their pick back in this deal in order to give Minnesota a draft asset.
2. Bradley Beal To The Miami Heat
Miami Heat Receive: Bradley Beal
Washington Wizards Receive: Andre Iguodala, Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson (sign and trade), Kendrick Nunn (sign and trade), two future first-round picks
Bradley Beal is a top-tier scorer in this league. He is also stuck on the Washington Wizards, which doesn't necessarily help him win. Perhaps Bradley Beal could request a trade this offseason if he doesn't see a future on the Wizards. If Beal does so, then the Miami Heat could potentially be a solid destination for him. They would offer Bradley Beal a chance to compete for a championship, which is something he hasn't done yet. They've been linked with James Harden and Bradley Beal before, and perhaps they would make a daring deal for Beal this offseason after missing out on James Harden when his trade saga was happening.
The Miami Heat would have to send out a monster package for a player like Beal. Andre Iguodala would be the main salary matching option. Young prospects Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson could potentially make their way over to Washington, with Robinson being sent over in a sign and trade. Kendrick Nunn is a promising scorer who would also go to the Wizards via sign and trade, and the future first-round picks would give the Wizards some solid assets for the future. This seems like a good trade as part of a potential Wizards rebuild which would let them start fresh.
1. Damian Lillard To The Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Damian Lillard
Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Montrezl Harrell (sign and trade), Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Talen Horton-Tucker (sign and trade), 2027 first-round pick
Damian Lillard is a loyal superstar, but if he were to request a move, then the Portland Trail Blazers would surely grant it, and allow him to go to a contender where he could win a championship. The Los Angeles Lakers could try and make a deal for the amazing point guard, and he would add another superstar to their already stacked roster. If the Portland Trail Blazers don't make noise these playoffs, then Lillard could decide he wants to win elsewhere.
The Los Angeles Lakers would send out two contracts via sign and trade: Montrezl Harrell and Talen Horton-Tucker. Montrezl Harrell is a big man who is entering his peak, and Talen Horton-Tucker is a young prospect that needs minutes and touches to develop. Kyle Kuzma could also thrive with more touches, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a player who can fill a 3 and D role. The 2027 first-round pick could be solid draft compensation. The Los Angeles Lakers could go all-in on winning by trading for Damian Lillard, and he could be the perfect player at the PG position for the Lakers in the future.
