Draft Night came and went and we know where the top-3 prospects in college will be playing next season. Moreover, we have seen some players move teams due to trades that mostly resulted in cap-space clearing and future assets. But we did not have any blockbuster deals that will shake the NBA so far. After all, Blockbuster trades are what makes the league exciting as teams push for the NBA title in 2021.
Luckily for fans, today's NBA is a league of constant movement and that is why we have multiple teams that have improved exponentially over the past few seasons. We have seen the Lakers, Clippers, and Heat become contenders overnight while teams like the Hawks and Suns are improving slowly by building their squads. However, there are a few deals that have yet to be made that could shape the course of the NBA season.
In order to analyze the deals that we want, it is time to rank the top 5 Blockbuster trades we want to see right now.
5. Russell Westbrook Becomes The Star In New York
Trade Package: Julius Randle, Dennis Smith, Frank Ntilikina for Russell Westbrook
There is no secret the New York Knicks want Russell Westbrook to become the face of their franchise. The Knicks need a fresh start and also need to unload their massive collection of players that don't fit into their system. Players like Dennis Smith Jr. and Frank Ntilikina need fresh starts somewhere else, while Julius Randle is a quality big that could help a team like the Rockets immediately. Houston should keep James Harden at all costs, and surrounding him with bigs and athletes will help.
For the Knicks, Westbrook assumes his position as the number one guy on a team and he also completes a very solid starting lineup. The Knicks can start with Westbrook, RJ Barrett, Kevin Knox, the recently drafted Obi Toppin, and Mitchell Robinson. Knox and Toppin could benefit from Westbrook's high-flying style because they complement that style well, and the Knicks clear out their roster for a legitimate superstar. This is a deal that New York Knicks fans want to see happen as soon as possible.
4. Phoenix Suns Continue Building A Playoff Team
Trade Package: Jalen Smith, Dario Saric (Sign and Trade), Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson for LaMarcus Aldridge
The Suns made a massive move in acquiring Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move has made them a playoff team because a backcourt of Chris Paul and Devin Booker is one of the best in the league. Especially with Deandre Ayton looking to improve his game and start becoming an All-Star, the Suns are a very promising team. They can continue their rise in the West by trading for former All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge.
The Spurs should be starting their rebuild and getting rid of a player like Aldridge is the first step. Aldridge can help teams win now and San Antonio should look for assets by moving him. By getting rookie Jalen Smith and a capable player like Dario Saric, they will manage to acquire some pieces. The key to this deal is that Saric signs a deal worth $10-$13 million which is expected for a player of his skill set as a sharpshooting big man. For the Suns, a starting lineup of Paul, Booker, Bridges, Aldridge, and Ayton is truly one of the best in the West.
3. The Lakers Acquire Their Third All-Star
Trade Package: Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Sign and Trade) for DeMar DeRozan
The Lakers made big moves so far by acquiring Dennis Schroder to add to LeBron James and Anthony Davis. While this may be a Big Three on paper, the real Big Three will happen when and if the Lakers trade for DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan is one of the best isolation scorers in the league and opposing defenses will have a ton of trouble dealing with the Lakers every night. If they acquire DeRozan, the Lakers are very likely to win their second straight title.
The Spurs need to rebuild and moving LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan is the way to go. If they move Aldridge to the Suns, they can focus on DeRozan next. Kyle Kuzma is perfect for San Antonio because he can be the primary scorer while KCP offers 2-way play on the wing. The key for the Spurs is getting a building block while the Lakers need to win it all again, so this is a win-win.
2. Boston Celtics Find Their Starting Center
Trade Package: Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, Payton Pritchard, Robert Williams, future first-round pick for Rudy Gobert
The Boston Celtics were very impressive last season by making the Eastern Conference Finals, led by young superstar Jayson Tatum. The only weakness in the Celtics squad was the lack of a capable starting center who could affect the game on both ends of the floor. They need a big man who can provide double-doubles every night and be an imposing presence to help the smaller players on the team. This is where All-Star Rudy Gobert comes in as the best defensive center in basketball.
The Celtics will have to give up 2 rookies in Payton Pritchard and Aaron Nesmith to make it happen, along with a future pick and their 2 capable big men. This big deal creates a lineup for the Celtics with Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Rudy Gobert. This team will almost certainly win the East and the Celtics should go all in for this immediately. The Jazz should only care about retaining Donovan Mitchell and adding young pieces to get rid of a potential chemistry-breaker in Gobert makes a lot of sense.
1. Clippers Acquire Derrick Rose For More Playmaking
Trade Package: Lou Williams for Derrick Rose
The Los Angeles Clippers need a playmaker to relieve the burden off of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Neither one of those players are point guards and they need a player who can handle the ball and create for them, because the Clippers completely lack playmaking. Patrick Beverley is only known as a defender while Lou Williams is a pure scorer, so one of them should be moved for a pure playmaker. Derrick Rose is in the back end of his career and he wants to win a title now, so playing with Kawhi and George is the way to go.
The Clippers will hate to lose Lou Williams, who is one of the greatest 6th men of all time, but Rose is a much better playmaker. Rose can create shots for Kawhi and George very easily because he is an excellent penetrator and passer in the paint. The Clippers also revamp their roster with new blood so this is a deal that could happen. The Pistons drafted Killian Hayes as their point guard, so Lou Williams could step in the role as a scoring two-guard by trading Derrick Rose.
