The x-factor in these Anthony Davis sweepstakes is young Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, a guy the Pelicans have wanted for a long time now.
Because the Celtics can't join trade discussions for Davis until the summer, the Pelicans have had to listen to other offers around the league. The Lakers have been basically offering the farm for Davis, but with the deadline about 24 hours out, it seems the Pelicans would really just rather trade for Tatum.
And, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the two teams have already discussed it.
"A source with knowledge of the talks said the potential centerpiece in a Pelicans package, 20-year-old Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum, has been discussed extensively by the two teams and is expected to be a major part of the talks when June rolls around," Amick writes.
Obviously, this poses a serious threat to the Lakers, as New Orleans likes Tatum way better than anyone they can offer. And since it seems the Celtics have told the Pels he'll be available to trade in the summer, don't expect the organization to make a move right now.
The Pelicans will likely be waiting until the summertime before letting go of their treasured star. Jayson Tatum is just too darn good for them to consider anything else.
