NBA Rumors: Lakers Could Acquire D'Angelo Russell And Patrick Beverley For Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook has had a mixed time on the Los Angeles Lakers. He has had some solid performances, but there have also been times where he has been subpar. Part of that is definitely due to him being an imperfect fit with the rest of the team.

In this article, we provide a scenario where Russell Westbrook goes to the Timberwolves, a team that would maximize his talents. The Lakers would in turn receive D'Angelo Russell and Patrick Beverley.

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: D'Angelo Russell, Patrick Beverley

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Russell Westbrook

Lakers Acquire Better Fitting Players

Russell Westbrook is objectively a good basketball player. However, he doesn't fit well with LeBron James due to his tendency to dominate the ball as a primary ballhandler. This trade would get the Lakers two players in Patrick Beverley and D'Angelo Russell who could be better fits on the Lakers' roster.

D'Angelo Russell is a former Laker himself, and he would definitely be a perfect fit next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Russell is a perimeter shot-creator and has the ability to play off-ball. The spacing that he would provide would help Anthony Davis and LeBron James, and he could also take over ballhandling/playmaking duties when LeBron James sits as well.

Patrick Beverley would give the Los Angeles Lakers a top-tier perimeter defender. The Los Angeles Lakers have been critiqued for their defense all season, and getting Beverley gives them a pesky guard that can take on the most difficult perimeter player assignment on the defensive end.

Overall, this trade would allow the Los Angeles Lakers to get two players that would help them maximize their superstars and gain some shooting and defense.

Minnesota Timberwolves Get A Veteran Leader

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a big three of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, and D'Angelo Russell, but they are still a play-in tier team. Perhaps a veteran leader like Russell Westbrook could help them go upwards in the standings and get the best out of Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards.

Russell Westbrook and Karl-Anthony Towns would be solid fits next to each other due to Towns' top-tier 3PT shooting. Russell Westbrook would have the rim open to him a fair amount of the time, while also having a big man that could space the floor for his drives. Anthony Edwards is also a capable shooter that can space the floor and be the secondary ballhandler behind Westbrook.

Russell Westbrook helped the Washington Wizards make the playoffs last season after a terrible start, and he could potentially be a difference-maker on this Minnesota Timberwolves squad. There's no doubt that he is entertaining to watch and drives winning when he's playing well, and he'd have the conditions to play well on the Minnesota Timberwolves.
