Truth to be told, the fact that Marc Gasol is still with the Memphis Grizzlies is something that most NBA insiders find surprising, as perhaps the team is unaware of the fact that their franchise player is 33 years-old.
Moreover, the Spaniard wants no part of a rebuilding process at this stage of his career, and even despite his love for the team, the city, and the fans, he’s ready to pursue a Championship while he still has the chance to do so.
And now that the Grizzlies are back at their losing ways with a broken locker room and no signs of improvement any time soon, they need to address the Gasol situation right now. It’s come to the point where they either trade him or lose him for nothing.
That’s why today, we’re going to let you know about the top 5 destinations for Marc Gasol.
5. Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks are thriving under Mike Budenholzer and have finally found a starting big man with Brook Lopez as a reinvented sharpshooter. Still, Lopez and Gasol could split minutes at the 5 to give them an epic squad.
The Bucks are one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference but still lack the veteran leadership a tough defender like Gasol can provide, and they could get him in return for Thon Maker, some spare parts and future Draft picks.
4. Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets are back in the playoff picture mostly thanks to James Harden’s historic run, although you’ve got to admit Clint Capela has also been great for them. Still, Gasol could play as an oversized power-forward thanks to his sweet shooting stroke once Clint comes back from his injury.
Landing the Spaniard would be the tricky part, though, as they would have to pile up a lot of future Draft picks to go along with Eric Gordon and Brandon Knight in order to get him. Also, it’s a huge gamble for them considering they don’t have enough money to keep him beyond this season.
3. Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot of concerns right now regarding how their Big-3 fits next to one another, and they’re also struggling to find a power forward that could fill the void that Dario Saric and Robert Covington left when they were traded to the Timberwolves.
Also, they don’t have a true backup for Joel Embiid, should the big man miss some time with an injury. Landing Marc would be huge for them, but they’d have to trade away Markelle Fultz and a couple of Draft picks to get him.
2. Boston Celtics
Somehow, the Boston Celtics haven’t been able to find consistency and they’re currently sitting at the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference despite being arguably the most talented and stacked team in the Conference with LeBron James heading west.
Even though piling up talent hasn’t worked out for them so far, adding a player of Gasol’s caliber may help them turn things around once and for all. Also, Al Horford could shift to the power forward spot with great ease and they’d have quite a dynamic frontcourt. In order to get him, they’d have to part ways with Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier and a couple of picks.
1. San Antonio Spurs
And finally, we all believe Marc Gasol’s best destination is San Antonio. The Spurs thrive off FIBA kind of basketball and Gregg Popovich really knows how to make the most of foreign players, while he’d also have the chance to play next to his older brother Pau.
The Spurs are still in playoff contention and have enough picks and young assets to try and make a run at the Spaniard, and they would have enough leverage to convince him to stay beyond this season even if that means taking a major pay cut.
