It seems as if the Lakers are back and running the league once again. After a marvelous offseason where they traded for Anthony Davis, many people looked at the Lakers as the team to beat and that notion looks to be correct so far.
Currently sitting firmly in 1st place in the Western Conference with a 28-7 record, the Lakers have been able to dominate teams behind the play of Anthony Davis and LeBron James. LeBron is having a historic year putting up 25.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 11 assists per game while AD is averaging 27.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Though off to a great start, there are some issues that they must fix if they want to ensure themselves a championship. Outside of LBJ and AD, there isn’t much going for the Lakers. The reason behind this is that instead of trying to sign high-tier veterans, they opted to wait on Kawhi’s decision. This choice led to them signing guys like Quinn Cook and Troy Daniels instead of players like J.J. Redick or Bojan Bogdanovic and this choice could come back to hurt them.
The biggest need for the Lakers right now is a point guard as Rondo and Cook have been mediocre at best this season. There are tons of options for the Lakers to choose from and with that being said, here are five point guards that the Lakers could look to acquire.
Collison made a surprising move last season. Collison was a player that a lot of teams were going to go after but, he opted to retire. This decision was short-lived however as he has stated his desire to return to the NBA.
For the Lakers, Collison would be an immediate upgrade over Rondo as he is a better shooter and defender. Collison shouldn’t cost too much for the Lakers and this would be a great low-risk, high-reward for them.
It was over 7 years ago when Lin broke out with the New York Knicks. After “Linsanity”, he, unfortunately, fizzled out and bounced around from team to team. This past offseason, he decided to take his talents overseas and join the Beijing Ducks. On the Ducks, Lin is looking like a star as he is averaging 24.9 points, 6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
On the Lakers, Lin could prove to be valuable as he is someone with great basketball IQ and has familiarity with the team as he played for the Lakers in the 2014-15 season. Again, he shouldn’t cost much, and he is a player worth bringing in.
After bouncing around the league, Augustin has seemed to find himself a home with the Orlando Magic. This season, he hasn’t been particularly good but, his poor play can be attributed to the fact that the Magic as a whole has been horrible on offense. Last season, Augustin averaged 11.7 points for the Magic on 42.1% shooting from three and this type of success can be replicated on the Lakers.
A potential trade would be Rajon Rondo and Talen Horton-Tucker in exchange for Augustin. The Lakers would be getting an immediate upgrade at the backup point guard position with Augustin and the Magic would be getting a young asset in Horton-Tucker.
Rose’s career has been a sad one and one can only imagine how dominant he would have been if not for injuries. Despite all of this, he has been amazing for the Pistons this season and should warrant a good return if the Pistons look to move him.
A potential trade would be Rajon Rondo, Talen Horton-Tucker, and multiple 2nd round picks in exchange for Rose. Rose would provide instant offense off the bench for the Lakers and a Rose-Kuzma combo would be nice for the Lakers. Horton-Tucker adds another young player to the Pistons and the multiple 2nds give you more draft capital. This trade would also show that the Pistons are planning on rebuilding and should be a good starting point.
Schroder and the OKC Thunder have surprised a ton of people to start the season as they are currently the 7th seed in the Western Conference. The Thunder have made everyone except for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander available in trades, despite the hot start, and the Lakers should take advantage of this opportunity.
A potential trade would be similar to the Rose trade with the Thunder getting young assets and draft capital. The Lakers would be getting an exceptional scorer in Schroder off the bench and a lineup of Schroder-Green-LeBron-Kuzma-Davis would be a formidable one that can score at will, shoot, and defend.
The Thunder adding multiple picks to their draft capital would increase their chances of acquiring an impactful player whether it’s through the draft or from a trade. This trade seems unlikely however dues to the little assets that the Lakers have.
