In an unexpected turn of events, D’Angelo Russell ending up on the Warriors. They have described him as a temporary rental until they can find a trade partner. Russell signed a 4-year deal worth $117 Million, that’s 27 million annually and he is likely going to find a new home.

Here are 5 teams who could be in the running. It is worthy to note that he cannot be traded until January 15th.

5. Dallas Mavericks

Mavs Get: D’Angelo Russell

Warriors Get: Tim Hardaway Jr, Dwight Powell, and a 1st Round pick

Why would the Mavericks do it?

The Mavericks have had rumored interest in acquiring many other pieces to formulate a big 3 in Dallas. Obtaining another star to pair with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. They would get an amazing player in isolation. Russell can play well off the ball allowing Doncic to still be the point forward.

Russell is only 23 years old, just like there is ice, the potential also is oozing in his veins. The Mavericks with this move could find themselves prepped for not only a return to the playoffs but a deep run.

Why would the Warriors do it?

It’s obvious to anybody that knows the Warriors system, D’Angelo Russell does not fit the makeup of their team. The family ties of Tim Hardaway Jr could make him a fan favorite in the Bay Area. There are definitely many ways for this young wing to grow, and maybe the growth needs to happen in a new place.

Dwight Powell would be the crown jewel of the deal. A promising big man who can stretch the defense, protect the rim, and has an excellent motor. Not to mention the first-round pick attached to deal is a pot sweetener.

4. Miami Heat

Heat Get: D’Angelo Russell

Warriors Get: Dion Waiters, Bam Adebayo, and a 1st Rounder

Why would the Heat do it?

Goran Dragic is aging and more injury-prone. A potential duo of Jimmy Butler and D’Angelo Russell could without a doubt run the east. The Miami Heat would be able to empty a big contract in Dion Waiters. The only sacrifice to me is giving up on promising big man, Adebayo. To get something, you have to be willing to give something back.

D’Angelo Russell could be the go-to scorer for the Heat. Russell taking his talents to South Beach gives the Heat a chance to be contenders again. The 1-2 punch of Russell and Butler could easily be one of the best in the NBA.

Why would the Warriors do it?

First, they will not end up on the wrong end of another Waiters dagger. More importantly, Waiters could fill a need temporarily as Klay Thompson regains his health. A backcourt of Curry and Waiters is more than solid. Waiters has developed his outside shot the past few seasons and has shown maturity in all aspects of the game.

The big prize would be getting Bam Bam. Adebayo has amazing defensive upside and is slowly putting together his game offensively. The Warriors signed Willie-Cauley Stein, but a battle for minutes is never a bad thing. Positional battles are exciting and make any team better. Competitiveness drives improvement much like competitiveness drives the economy.

3. Orlando Magic

Magic Get: D’Angelo Russell

Warriors Get: Aaron Gordon, Mo Bamba, and a 1st Rounder

Why would the Magic do it?

The Magic are in desperate need for an upgrade at the point. Russell instantly provides that over the likes of DJ Augustin or Markelle Fultz. Imagine a deadly pick and roll with Russell and Vucevic. The addition of Russell could be the key that turns the engine to allow the Magic to win a playoff series.

Winning a playoff series is the next step for this Orlando Magic team. This move allows them to keep guys like Terrence Ross, Nikola Vucevic and Jonathan Isaac. They would have to give up two promising big men, but the price to pay is worth the cause.

Why would the Warriors do it?

The chance to add Kevin Durant’s replacement in Aaron Gordon is too salivating to pass up. Gordon is capable of playing and guarding up to 3 positions. The big man has worked on his outside shot and the explosive athleticism and great defensive instincts are what would get this deal serious traction.

Mo Bamba is no slouch either. The big man reportedly put on muscle and feels great. Bamba spent most of his rookie season hampered with an injury. The promising rim protector with a sweet shooting touch is too good to pass up for the Warriors system.

2. Los Angeles Clippers

Clippers Get: D’Angelo Russell

Warriors Get: Danilo Gallinari, Lou Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and a 1st Round pick

Why would the Clippers do it?

Depending on how the Kawhi sweepstakes pan out, the Clippers might be forced come trade deadline to make a power move. The move would entail trading away a good chunk of their existing core for a star point guard. Even, if the Clippers obtain Kawhi Leonard, the chance to pair another star with him at a steep cost is still worthwhile.

The Clippers chances to get a star that can score 20-25 nightly and dish out 7-8 assists a game is well worth the risk. Pull the trigger West, and Rivers might have a new favorite player to coach. This move could push the Clippers to be a top 4 team in the West. A conference that appears more wide open by the day.

Why would the Warriors do it?

The first attracting component is the expiring deal of Gallo. He would be a decent rental and fits the system to a tee. Lou Williams would be an amazing addition considering all the scoring they lose due to Durant and Iggy leaving as well as Klay’s injury. They could have Lou run the 2nd unit and playing him off the ball next to Curry.

Shai would be one of the best backup point guards in the NBA. This potential acquisition makes more sense considering the Warriors could be moving on from both Quinn Cook and Shaun Livingston. The ability to go 9-11 guys deep is what separates the contending teams from the pretending teams.

1. Minnesota Timberwolves

Timberwolves Get: D’Angelo Russell

Warriors Get: Andrew Wiggins

Why would the Timberwolves do it?

Unless you have been like Patrick Star and living under a rock, it’s common knowledge of the Wolves interest in D’Angelo Russell. He and Towns played AAU ball together. The existing chemistry of two lifelong friends would make the West on a high watch. Derrick Rose is in Detroit and Jeff Teague seems to be regressing.

Since, his first season, Minnesota and Wiggins have not been an ideal pairing. Wiggins needs the chance to start anew in a different jersey. The salaries match up amazingly so let’s get this deal done. We all go this is the go-to trade for Minnesota fans in NBA 2K.

Why would the Warriors do it?

The Warriors have a history of turning players careers around. Ask guys like JaVale McGee and DeMarcus Cousins. Spending any amount of time in a championship environment is enticing and transformative. Wiggins is young and capable of putting together a bounce-back season. The Warriors would likely hand him a starting spot and hope they’ve found an ideal replacement for KD or Klay temporarily with his injury.

This could be a big risk. However, the best GM’s are the ones who continue to take the necessary risks. The Timberwolves could be the perfect trade partner to get this deal done.
