Kawhi Leonard has been involved in a lot of controversies all season long due to his lingering quad injury, with the San Antonio Spurs keeping everybody in the dark regarding his situation before information was leaked to the media and the hundreds of rumors just emerged from everywhere.
Even if the Spurs-Leonard situation isn’t nearly as bad as some people try to make us believe, the fact that the Spurs have gotten so far without him this season make everybody think that his tenure under Popovich might as well be over and it wouldn’t be the end of the world for either party.
Naturally, Leonard is going to draw a lot of interest during the offseason, with every single general manager in the world keen and desperate to land the best two way player in the league to reinforce their squad.
It’s still pretty early to say what may or may not happen with Kawhi Leonard, but what we can do is let you know about the top 5 trade packages the San Antonio Spurs could get in return for their All-Star.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
Kawhi Leonard is the guy that better knows how to contain LeBron James in the world, so with LeBron’s future still up in the air, what better way to convince him to stay on board than actually landing his kryptonite?
Leonard could boost the Cavs all the way back to the team to beat in the Eastern Conference, while Popovich would have several players perfectly suited for his system on Kevin Love, Cedi Osman, Ante Zizic and a 2nd round pick in return.
4. Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks just need one more piece to round up their project and become a legit Championship contender in the Eastern Conference, and pairing Kawhi Leonard with Giannis Antetokounmpo would make them a defensive nightmare, especially on switches.
Leonard’s quiet temper fits that kind of market perfectly, while he’d have a way easier path to the NBA Finals if he moved to the East. In order to pull this off, the Deer would have to part ways with two outstanding prospects in Thon Maker and the reigning rookie of the year - Malcolm Brogdon, as well as a couple of future 1st round picks.
3. Boston Celtics
According to Jalen Rose, this would actually be the deal that would make more sense for everybody involved, with the Boston Celtics needing another All-Star to become the best team in the East and San Antonio needing young talent to make up for their aging veterans.
So, in order to land Kawhi Leonard, Danny Ainge would have to give up a lot, but thankfully he has enough assets to do so. For this trade to go on, the Celtics would send Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum to the Spurs, a very risky move that could bite them in the rear eventually.
2. Philadelphia 76ers
We’re all already pretty high on the Philadelphia 76ers and The Process, with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons proving to be perennial All-Stars in the making, while Markelle Fultz is finally back out there and ready to prove he’s worthy of the 1st overall pick.
Obviously, adding Kawhi Leonard into the mix would instantly make them title contenders for years to come, while Gregg Popovich would be thrilled to get Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Timothe Luwawu and a future 1st round pick in return.
1. Golden State Warriors
Kawhi Leonard is keen to earn a lot of money in endorsement deals, so making a move to one of the most lucrative franchises in the world would be a huge step in the right direction, not to mention the fact that he would play for arguably the best team of the past 30 years.
Leonard would be a perfect fit for the run and gun Warriors offense while rounding up their top-tier team defense, but Steve Kerr would have to part ways with Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in order to pull this off.
