Will the Spurs join the pursuit of Anthony Davis this summer? According to Zack Buckley of Bleacher Report, it is certainly a possibility and could include a package centered around DeMar DeRozan and Lonnie Walker IV.
“DeRozan is both a notable name and a star-level producer. He’s one of only eight players to score at least 10,000 points since the start of 2013-14, and he’s become a prolific passer the past two seasons (5.6 assists). He could give the Pelicans their post-Davis focal point on offense and at the front gate. Walker is a mystery, and the pick will probably be a dart throw in the 20s, but New Orleans needs future assets, and those meet that threshold.”
The list of other teams in pursuit of Davis includes the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics, and the Clippers. Boston remains as the most likely to acquire Davis, as their stockpile of picks and young players is enough to sway any negotiation in their favor.
The Spurs could make things very interesting depending on what kind of package the Pels are looking for. A Walker/DeRozan package gives them both a young piece to develop, and an established star to build around. They could build for the future without sacrificing the present.
That is a very rare position to be in, one the Pelicans should seriously consider when making their move in the A.D. sweepstakes this summer.
