After a slow start to the season, the Spurs suddenly find themselves 27-21 as the 6th seed in the West. Popovich and the crew have turned their season around dramatically since mid-October.
Even with that being true, they could use some more help. And according to Jabari Young of The Athletic, the Spurs have already started their search, most notably for a wing.
According to Young, the Spurs have inquired about possible targets on the wing over the last few months, including Trevor Ariza, who was eventually sent to Washington instead.
Young indicates Stanley Johnson as one future target for the Spurs going forward, and it will be interesting to see if they can put together a package enticing enough to get him.
The odd man out for the Spurs is Pau Gasol, who has seen limited playing time due to an old-school game and advanced age. The Spurs might use him as a trade piece before the deadline, but they'll need more than him if they want a guy like Johnson.
Play their cards right, and they might end up a step closer to true contention. Waste the opportunity, and they might find it harder to get out of the "middle zone" they've gotten comfortable sitting in this season.
