The 2027 class has the chance to become one of the greatest free-agent classes in NBA history. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, several of the league’s biggest superstars could enter free agency through expiring contracts or player options.
While many of these stars are expected to sign extensions with their current teams, there is still a chance that a large number of superstars could enter the 2027 free-agent market.
The biggest name is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Although the Miami Heat acquired him with the expectation that he would sign a long-term extension, Giannis still has a $62.7 million player option for the following season. If the Heat fail to contend, or if Giannis believes Miami is not the perfect long-term fit for him, there is a chance that he could opt out and enter free agency.
Stephen Curry is another player to watch. The Golden State Warriors are expected to offer him a two-year, $136 million extension, and all signs point toward Curry accepting it. But the Warriors have not made any major moves this offseason and are expected to run it back with the same roster. Reports suggest Curry could use his extension talks to push the Warriors into making a win-now move. If the Warriors choose not to do that, there is a chance Curry could decline an extension and enter free agency.
Nikola Jokic is also an interesting name to watch. The three-time MVP has a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season, and the Denver Nuggets want to sign him to a five-year, $359 million supermax extension next summer. But Jokic has already postponed extension talks twice, and the Nuggets are still not among the top contenders in the Western Conference. If their championship hopes continue to fade despite Jokic remaining in his prime, he could entertain the possibility of testing free agency.
LeBron James recently signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers and has a $4 million player option for the following season. If the Sixers fail to contend, or injuries derail their campaign and prevent them from reaching their goals, LeBron could enter free agency once again in search of another opportunity.
The Warriors also have uncertainty surrounding Jimmy Butler. His current deal expires in 2027, and he is recovering from an ACL injury that is expected to keep him out until some point this season. If he fails to meet expectations after returning, the Warriors may decide not to offer him another extension, forcing Butler into free agency.
Anthony Davis has a $62.4 million player option and is eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension with the Washington Wizards. Talks are still ongoing, but if the Wizards choose not to offer such a large contract, or if Davis suffers another injury-plagued season, he could enter free agency in search of a new team.
Karl-Anthony Towns also has a $61 million player option and is eligible for a four-year, $272 million extension with the New York Knicks. After winning the NBA championship, Towns reportedly wants to remain in New York, and the Knicks are keen on keeping him. However, extension talks have yet to begin, and the Knicks may ask him to take a slight pay cut so they can keep the roster together while avoiding second-apron restrictions.
Kevin Durant has a $46 million player option with the Houston Rockets. Houston had a decent first season with Durant, but it ended in a disappointing playoff exit. If the Rockets once again fail to contend or remain well behind the top teams in the Western Conference, the two-time Finals MVP could reconsider his future.
Kyrie Irving has a $42.4 million player option and is expected to return next season after recovering from his ACL injury. If the Dallas Mavericks decide to move in a different direction or build differently around Cooper Flagg, Irving could decline his option and seek another championship opportunity elsewhere.
Kawhi Leonard remains the biggest wildcard among these stars. He was reportedly expected to sign a two-year, $126 million extension with the Toronto Raptors after being traded there from the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the trade has been put on hold because of the NBA’s investigation into the Aspiration scandal, leaving his future unresolved.
Brandon Ingram is another player affected by the Kawhi Leonard trade. He owns a $41.9 million player option, and his future also remains uncertain because of the delay surrounding that deal.
History suggests that many of these superstars will sign extensions before they ever reach the open market. Still, the possibility of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kawhi Leonard, and Brandon Ingram all potentially entering free agency could make the summer of 2027 one of the most anticipated free-agent classes in NBA history.
