LeBron James‘ free agency remains the biggest story of the NBA offseason, and while the Cleveland Cavaliers remain the favorites, Colin Cowherd thinks there is one other team that would be the perfect landing spot for the four-time champion.
Speaking on his podcast, Cowherd made it clear that if he were giving advice to LeBron, he would want him to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Rich Paul said there was a frenzy for LeBron this offseason. A frenzy? I’m not a meteorologist, but I’d downgrade this storm a little. Ten years ago? Absolutely. Today? How many teams are really lining up? The three best teams in the league right now are San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and the Knicks. The Spurs and Thunder are loaded with young talent. Neither one is interested. They’re not getting off their e-bikes to help LeBron up the ramp. The Knicks just won. They don’t need him.”
“Of course, most teams would take LeBron. That’s not the question. The question is whether teams are kicking down the door to get him, like shoppers rushing into a warehouse TV sale. There’s a difference between interest and demand. That’s the difference between what Rich Paul is selling and what the market is actually buying. Cleveland is the sentimental favorite. But LeBron has already left them twice. Golden State? The nostalgia is powerful. But so are naps for old people. And they need some.”
“Philadelphia would be my choice. I’ll explain why. LeBron’s career has had three acts. First came the show-off stage. No championships yet. Just proving to the world how gifted he was. Then came the championship stage. You’re in your prime. You’ve made your money. Now it’s about winning rings. That was Miami. Then came the mogul stage. You’re financially secure. You’re thinking bigger. You’ve got the trophies.”
“Now you’re managing the business side of your career. That was the Lakers. Honestly, that relationship never really felt like a love affair. It felt more like a transaction. More Venmo than vigor. Now LeBron is in the sunset stage. Maybe one or two years left. I’d choose Philadelphia. It’s the best starting five. Potentially four Hall of Famers. An easier conference. Who cares if it’s the easier path? Billy Joel only wants to play Madison Square Garden now. Oscar-winning actors pick the best filming locations. Work smarter. Live better.”
“Tom Brady chose Tampa because they had great receivers, an offensive-minded coach, and a manageable division. He understood the assignment. Age brings wisdom. The smart move is to join the best team with the best teammates. The crown still fits LeBron. The only question is where he wants to wear it.”
“Take the easy route. Take the quickest path to another championship. Go to Philadelphia. Let the haters hate. You’ve earned it. So what if you’re chasing one more ring? The league has been chasing you for the last 20 years.”
The Sixers present a very interesting basketball case. After landing Jaylen Brown this offseason, the Sixers now feature a core led by Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Brown. And adding LeBron would instantly create the most talented starting lineup in the East and the biggest threat to the New York Knicks.
But the race is far from over. Over the last week, there have been several conflicting reports. Brian Windhorst stated that rival executives believe the Cavaliers remain the team to beat, but also stated that executives are operating based on “vibes.”
The Miami Heat have also been getting strong interest. Adam Schefter suggested that LeBron’s new obsession with golf could make Miami very appealing. Sam Amick also stated that one rival team thinks the Heat are the favorites in the race.
The Golden State Warriors have not disappeared either. They are looking to make bold moves to strengthen their roster, and they have an interest in Anthony Davis as well to lure LeBron. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets have not bowed out either.
But Cowherd’s point isn’t based on emotion. Many believe a return to Cleveland would provide the perfect storybook ending; he thinks LeBron should pick the best route to another championship.
Whether LeBron agrees remains to be seen, but the Sixers have another voice in their recruiting pitch.
