Nikola Jokic is one of the premier big men in the league, someone who is talented to carry a team deep into the playoffs. He’s faced off against a star like Kawhi Leonard and won. Jokic is one of the best players in the world, and top tier players like to play with other elite players (see Anthony Davis and LeBron James). Jokic has a good squad with the Nuggets, and will most likely stay put for the foreseeable future. If he were to request a trade it would have to be to somewhere where he’d have a surefire way of winning.
The Dallas Mavericks could be that team. Luka Doncic looks like he’s the next generational defining player; any player would want to play with him. If Jokic wants to go to the Mavericks, then Mark Cuban will surely pull out all the tricks in the bag to make it happen. If you can pair two superstar players, you do it. This is a trade that could work if Nikola Jokic were to decide that the Nuggets were not the team he wanted to play for, but that possibility is slim.
Dallas Mavericks Receive: Nikola Jokic
Denver Nuggets Receive: Kristaps Porzingis, Maxi Kleber, two future first-round picks
The Mavericks Pair Two European Superstars For The Future
Nikola Jokic is 25. Luka Doncic is 21. If they were to team up, then they could dominate the league for years to come. Each of them is already MVP caliber or close to it. Together, they could show the league what European style basketball looks like and have a culture setting pairing. Having two of the biggest European players team up could inspire a new generation of fans, all following the Mavericks. Both stars have expansive and diverse skill sets, that allow them to do anything on the basketball court.
Pairing the best passing big man in the league with Luka Doncic is a move that could only lead to success with the Mavericks. Kristaps Porzingis is a great player who can shoot the ball very well for his size. Yet, Porzingis is no Jokic; he lacks the playmaking capability of Jokic, and sometimes that can be the difference between a playoff exit or winning championships. Both Jokic and Doncic can shoot, pass, and create for themselves. Pairing them together could create a new dynasty, and put them as the defining leaders in a new generation.
The Nuggets Get A Huge Warchest Of Assets
In this scenario, Jokic would have to request a trade for the Nuggets to trade him. If they were to trade him, then the Mavericks package would be great for their future. Getting a star like Porzingis in return would be a blessing; having him on the books would allow them to either keep Porzingis and trade them later or pair him with Jamal Murray.
Trading Jokic for Porzingis would show that they’re willing to bet on the Canadian PG; Porzingis would take up less usage than Jokic, and allow Murray to have the ball in his hands all of the time.
Jokic is unlikely to ask out of the Denver Nuggets, they had a great showing in the bubble, and both Jokic and Murray looked like they were breaking out. But if Jokic wants to leave, then a player like Porzingis could headline an appealing package. The Latvian sharpshooter is the prototypical big man for the modern era; and a perfect co-star for a high-usage guard like Murray. Maxi Kleber is a solid player, and the two first-round picks could allow them to draft role players in the future. This package would be as good as any that the Nuggets could get for Jokic.
While Jokic isn’t going to leave Denver anytime soon, thinking about the potential of the Jokic-Doncic duo surely leaves fans wondering about whether it could happen. The two would be a great fit with each other and anytime they would pass, the audience would be at the edge of their seat. While there is no direct indication of any trade in the works, there could be situations where the Nuggets accept a Mavericks’ offer for Nikola Jokic.
