After a spectacular run through the second half of the 2025-26 season, the Charlotte Hornets looked primed to be a more competitive unit in the upcoming campaign. However, with the Hornets pulling the trigger on a trade sending LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves, these expectations must be revisited.
For the most part, it can be argued that the Hornets’ return on LaMelo Ball has been largely worthwhile. However, while speaking with ESPN at the Las Vegas Summer League, Hornets head coach Charles Lee touched on the challenges associated with Ball’s departure.
“Man, it is hard,” Lee began. “We built such a great relationship, Melo and I, I think personally and professionally. So those phone calls are never easy ones. I thought that he helped our group create a foundation, a standard for how we want to operate every day, and I think that he’s really just scratching the surface. I think there’s more for that young man to achieve. So I’m looking forward to following the rest of his career.”
LaMelo Ball was a big part of the Hornets’ success last season. As one of the most exciting young guards in the NBA, Ball contributed with his scoring and playmaking versatility. With averages of 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game, he elevated Charlotte’s offense to new levels and transformed them into a threat in the East.
For all his brilliance, however, LaMelo Ball was routinely criticized for his inconsistency. When also factoring in the rumors suggesting that he fell out of favor with the front office last year, a trade may have been inevitable.
In a way, it would seem like the Hornets have done away with some “problematic” assets to start afresh around the core of Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller. Aside from these two promising young players, though, Charles Lee also had some positive words about the Hornets’ other offseason moves.
“Our front office did make some moves, and I thought that they had the long-term vision in sight,” he noted. “We had a ton of success; we have a very passionate fan base, and so I know some of the moves seem daunting to them, but I do think that it’s going to help us in the long run of being able to sustain success.”
“I think that having Coby (White) as the starting point guard to set the table for a bunch of guys, I’m looking forward to him having an expanded role this year. Naz Reid, with all the versatility that he brings offensively and defensively, will create a different dynamic for our group.”
With LaMelo Ball out of the lineup, the Hornets will promote Coby White to the starting lineup, effectively replacing their former floor general with a dynamic combo guard. When also factoring in how Naz Reid‘s versatility could impact Charlotte’s offense, the Hornets have certainly made some noteworthy additions.
Losing LaMelo Ball will undoubtedly have an impact on Charlotte’s playmaking, but it will be intriguing to see how the team makes up for it. With sufficient talent at their disposal, the Hornets are likely to remain competitive.
