After missing the entirety of the 2025-26 season, the Dallas Mavericks can only hope to receive positive updates on Kyrie Irving. With the entire fan base eagerly awaiting the superstar’s return, there is reason to believe that the wait may be over.
Although the Mavericks fully committed to the rebuild route this offseason, Kyrie Irving’s health status has been one of the most crucial storylines for the team. On that note, during a recent appearance on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” ESPN’s Shams Charania shared an extremely promising update on Irving’s health and recovery. He stated:
“My understanding is Kyrie Irving’s rehab has gone amazing. There was a sense during last season that, you know, if the Mavericks were playing at a very competitive level, like Kyrie Irving could have potentially come back in December or January. But given the way the season was going, and it obviously didn’t make sense for the Mavericks either to rush Kyrie Irving back onto the floor.”
After suffering an ACL injury in March 2025, Kyrie Irving was expected to be sidelined for an extended period. While there was optimism about his return for the 2025-26 season, the Mavericks, who were languishing at the bottom of the table with the worst teams in the West, weren’t in any position to compete.
This effectively dissuaded the team from speeding up his return, allowing the superstar to recover in his own time. While this decision was criticized at first, it may have been the right move after all. The analyst continued:
“But from my understanding, he’s fully recovered, 100% with that ACL tear from a couple seasons ago. He’s been fully entrenched in the Mavericks’ plans this offseason. He and Dusty May, they’ve spoken. Him and Masai Ujiri, the new president, they’ve spoken. Mike Schmitz, their new general manager, has spoken with Kyrie Irving as well.”
“So they’re entering next season, Patrick Dumont, the owner, he really wants to see Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg in this team next season and how that duo looks because, you know, Kyrie Irving is the elder statesman of this team… They feel like that duo, that leadership, is going to play a big role in Cooper Flagg’s development as well.”
The Dallas Mavericks have undergone some large-scale changes this offseason. With new individuals leading the front office and the coaching staff, it is clear that the Mavericks are embracing a new direction.
While this would typically raise questions about the veterans on the roster, the franchise remains committed to growing with Kyrie Irving. For all intents and purposes, this is a solid decision on the front office’s behalf.
When healthy, Kyrie Irving is arguably among the most dynamic offensive players in the NBA. While boasting phenomenal ball-handling skills, Irving’s unpredictable rhythm and flashy playing style make for a dazzling spectacle.
Charania’s report on Irving also emphasizes that the superstar has left a positive impression on the Mavericks’ new front office and coaching hires. To that point, Mavs HC Dusty May was left awestruck after watching Irving work out, adding to the hype of seeing him in action again.
Although Irving missed last season, his track record remains promising. For the 2024-25 season, the Mavs’ superstar averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 40.1% from beyond the arc. When also factoring in his career averages of 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, it is safe to say he will remain impactful.
At the current juncture, the Dallas Mavericks may not look very convincing as a competitive unit in the West. Still, with young players like Cooper Flagg on the roster, Dallas is a team brimming with potential.
Now, with a veteran like Kyrie Irving returning to the fray, the Mavericks could be even more competitive. With the nine-time All-Star also mentoring Flagg, it will be intriguing to see how the reigning ROTY performs in his sophomore campaign.
