The Warriors have agreed on a one-year deal to bring back their former backup big man, Charles Bassey, to the San Francisco Bay Area.

“The Golden State Warriors and center Charles Bassey have agreed on a one-year deal, bringing the big man back to the Bay Area for his sixth NBA season, sources tell ESPN. Bassey returns to Golden State in the wake of Quinten Post joining the Grizzlies on an offer sheet,” wrote senior NBA insider Shams Charania on X.

The 25-year-old Bassey ended the 2025-26 season with the Warriors while averaging 10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks while shooting 67.7% inside the paint in just five games played.

This move comes in the aftermath of losing out on Quinten Post in restricted free agency. Post went to Memphis after signing a three-year, $30 million offer sheet with the Grizzlies, which the Warriors refused to match.

In comparison, Quinten Post averaged 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 44.0% from the field and 33.6% from behind the three-point line. While Post could certainly stretch the floor, over his two seasons with the Warriors, he rarely showed signs of being a promising fit with the team.

After multiple 10-day contract stints with the Celtics, the Warriors signed Bassey near the end of the 2025-26 regular season, and he had only played five games in the Warriors’ jersey before.

He is a much-needed young prospect in Golden State’s frontcourt to support the veteran bigs like Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis. Over the past two seasons, the 25-year-old has appeared in NBA games for five different teams.

Many teams believe he is interesting enough to play in the NBA, but not so much that they would offer him a standard contract, as evidenced by his string of 10-day contracts. Nobody should be doubting Bassey’s ability to play at this point.

The two main issues are perimeter defense and health. Throughout his brief career, Bassey has suffered multiple knee injuries. He must be healthy for the Warriors to replace 40-year-old Al Horford when he needs a rest due to aging, or Kristaps Porzingis if he keeps missing a lot of games due to illness and injury.

Therefore, I expect that Charles Bassey will play only in limited rotation minutes and will have to earn more minutes over veteran big men like Horford and Porzingis. It remains to be seen how Bassey fits into this roster, but his playing style reminds me of Kevon Looney to some extent, so he can certainly be a promising young addition to this aging Warriors roster.
