LeBron James has closed one of the grandest chapters of his career with a touching message to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaking during the live recording of the Mind the Game podcast alongside Tyrese Haliburton at Fanatics Fest, LeBron reflected on the eight seasons he spent in Los Angeles. He expressed gratitude to everyone who was part of the journey, starting with Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka.
“First of all, shout out to my former team. I spent eight great years with the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most historical franchises in the world. Shout out to Jeanie Buss, the whole Buss family, Rob Pelinka, everybody. All the coaches that I played for there. All my teammates.”
“S**t, I’m going to miss them all, obviously. It was an unbelievable ride, and I’m just looking forward to what holds next as I wind down the final stages of my journey.”
It was an emotional message that brought closure to one of the most debated eras in Lakers history.
Across eight seasons, James played in 479 games for the Lakers, averaging 25.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.9 assists while shooting 51.3% from the field and 35.6% from three-point range. In that time, he earned eight All-Star selections, seven All-NBA selections, won the 2020 NBA championship, and was named Finals MVP.
LeBron also became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer while wearing a Lakers uniform, adding another historic milestone to an already legendary resume.
His Lakers tenure was an up-and-down roller-coaster ride.
He first joined a rebuilding roster before the Lakers traded for Anthony Davis. Together, they won a title in their first season together in 2020. That was the peak moment of LeBron’s time in Los Angeles.
But after that, several difficult years followed. Injuries were a big part of that, along with the roster issues.
During LeBron’s eight-year run, the Lakers missed the playoffs twice, suffered three first-round exits, reached the second round once, advanced to the Western Conference Finals once, and won one NBA title.
Despite all those ups and downs, James remained one of the league’s best players throughout his tenure.
Reports have suggested that the relationship between LeBron and the Lakers’ front office deteriorated over the past few seasons, particularly following the Russell Westbrook trade.
After the Luka Doncic trade, the Lakers clearly shifted towards building for the future, and LeBron knew that. Perhaps the biggest surprise came when reports indicated that the two sides never even held a meeting before free agency.
But LeBron’s message made it clear that there are no hard feelings.
Wherever the next chapter of his career unfolds, James leaves Los Angeles as one of the greatest players ever to wear the purple and gold. While his exit may have been awkward, his farewell showed one thing above everything else: he will always cherish the eight years he spent with the Lakers.
