The Miami Heat will be entering the 2026-27 season looking like a completely different team. Although the frontcourt duo of Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo will garner the most attention, Davion Mitchell‘s upgraded role is also noteworthy.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s arrival was made possible by the departure of Tyler Herro and several key players. This effectively asserted Davion Mitchell’s status as the starting point guard for the Heat. But how does this affect Miami’s overall strength?
Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins addressed this question recently on “NBA Today.” While speaking about the Heat’s roster, Perkins also shared an interesting update on Davion Mitchell’s approach to embracing a larger role.
“What they [the Heat] have is enough to get them to the playoffs,” Perkins began. “Monica talked about their defense. I mean, think about it. They have four guys who are All-Defensive-caliber players as far as making an All-Defensive team.”
“We think about Bam and Giannis, yes, obviously. But Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell… It’s crazy because we’re bringing up their defense. But I had literally just gotten a call from Davion Mitchell’s camp asking me about sending him Iman Shumpert’s and Tony Allen’s numbers because he wanted to pick their brains on how to become an even better defender. So think about their mindset going into this.”
Iman Shumpert made a name for himself as a reliable two-way wing capable of guarding multiple positions. Having played a vital role in defending Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson during the Cavaliers‘ 2016 NBA Finals run, Shumpert’s advice could prove useful.
More than Shumpert, however, seeking help from Tony Allen, who is widely considered one of the best wing defenders in NBA history, seems far more valuable. With six All-Defensive selections to his name, Allen is undoubtedly a legend. Given his single-minded commitment to locking people up, Allen could have a massive influence in helping Davion Mitchell improve defensively.
Davion Mitchell has already made a name for himself as one of the best defensive point guards in the NBA. Having earned the nickname “Off-Night,” the 27-year-old certainly lives up to it with his pesky, hard-nosed effort.
While this is impressive, it is clear that the Heat guard has greater aspirations to improve. In this regard, seeking help from elite defenders like Iman Shumpert and Tony Allen seems perfectly reasonable.
Even though he established himself as a solid rotation piece last season, it seems like Mitchell is eager to fill bigger shoes this summer. Given that he averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game last season, the 27-year-old can certainly be optimistic about increasing his output.
Mitchell’s commitment to overall improvement has been immensely promising. To that point, even Heat star Bam Adebayo acknowledged the guard’s offseason conditioning and training, as he stated:
“Davion’s not fat anymore. He’s not fat anymore. He got himself in shape, and I feel like he’s going to have a great season this year. The way he’s working out. The way he’s treating his body. I feel like he’s going to have a great season.”
Adebayo’s expectations for Davion Mitchell hint at dramatic improvement. However, it may also be perceived as a clear indication of how important he will be to the team’s success next season.
As the primary point-of-attack defender and playmaker, Mitchell will play a massive role on both ends of the floor. With more being demanded of him, the Heat can only hope his offseason training pays off. But given the sheer lack of point guard depth, Miami would benefit from making some key signings to support Mitchell with some backup.
