Pat Riley has been the President of Basketball Operations for the Miami Heat since 1995. In 31 years of excellence, he has seen several legendary players go through the ranks of the Heat.
In today’s introductory press conference for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Riley recalled all the greats that have played for the Heat before the Greek superstar, and he almost forgot to mention Bam Adebayo.
The 81-year-old team president circled back to it later and fixed his comments. He hilariously also referred to Adebayo’s altercation with Tyler Herro.
“And then getting Zo and Tim, and then getting, you know, Caron drafting him with Dwayne in 2003, and then getting Shaquille, I’m sorry, Caron, okay, and winning the title,” Riley said as he began talking about his experience over the years.
“The big three were something that Andy and I had talked about for a long time,” Riley revealed.
“Since 2006, we planned to have the room and the space, and thank God that they’d all decided they wanted to play together. They were banging their heads against the wall about trying to win in Cleveland and Toronto, and they ended up here, and that was wonderful,” said Riley on LeBron James and Chris Bosh joining Dwyane Wade in Miami.
“And then it was Jimmy Butler and two trips to the finals, and now we got Giannis, and I think this is just part of who the Heat are in the pursuit of excellence. But you don’t win championships unless you have greatness on the court and on the bench.”
“It isn’t just one player. I think Bobby Portis, as you listen to him today, you know, made some great comments about what it takes to win and being on the same page, just as Giannis just talked about. And so I’m just excited, so excited for this challenge.”
“The challenge is nothing more than playing for higher stakes. And if you don’t want to play for higher stakes in the NBA, you might as well go play in the boys’ club somewhere, the CYO, or something like that.”
“But that’s why I’m excited that we have this opportunity, and we’re going to try to make the most of it. But we have a lot of work to do, as he said. So, it’s a great day. It’s just a great day, and I’m excited about it.”
“I know that I was remiss in mentioning one guy, and I don’t want to get knocked out,” said Riley before the audience broke into laughter after realizing the reference to Adebayo’s altercation with Tyler Herro.
“You know, Bam was one of those guys who came in here, too. Bam was in 2019, came in here, and he’s been basically the foundation of this organization since then.”
“So, you got me? I’m good, right? Okay,” Riley added as he turned to Adebayo in the audience. “And he had a lot to do, obviously, because of the relationship with Giannis and convincing all of us that this is the way that we should go.”
“So go on. Bam. I got you. And he came all the way back from Vegas, you know, I mean, to see this. So he’s honoring this man,” Riley concluded.
The league has reportedly decided it will not be taking any action on Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Usually, when two teammates fight, it is the team that is expected to mete out the punishment.
But in this peculiar case, they engaged in a fight after they had already become former teammates. Therefore, neither team is expected to hand out a penalty, since they are all treating it as an off-court personal incident after reportedly reviewing surveillance footage.
I feel that if two grown men, who are no longer teammates, engage in an altercation that is only likely going to fire up the rivalry between both teams in the future, the league and the specific teams are correct in not getting involved. It is not all right to raise your hand at anyone.
If anything, it will make fans more excited to see Adebayo and Herro share the court next time as rivals instead of teammates. It remains to be seen how their altercation impacts how they will go at each other the next time the Heat face the Bucks in the 2026-27 regular season.
