The Miami Heat lured LeBron James to South Beach back in 2010, but they weren’t able to repeat that feat in 2026. James stunned the basketball world by choosing to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.
This is a hammer blow to the Heat, who were viewed as one of the likeliest landing spots for James. It wasn’t just the outside world that believed that, but also the 41-year-old’s agent, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne revealed on NBA Today that Paul had initially expected James to go back to the Heat.
“I spoke to Rich Paul about that about an hour ago, and he said for a lot of the time he thought it was going to end up being Miami,” Shelburne said. “That seemed to be a nice fit, that story. But he said, when you’ve been to a place before, when you’ve won in a place before, if you go back, it may not be the same.
“You kind of want to leave those memories where they were,” Shelburne continued. “You want to leave those memories as they are. And they had a great time together when he won two titles down in Miami. You’ll never top 2016 in Cleveland… And so, I think this appeal of something new is attractive at this stage in his career.”
It is often said you shouldn’t go back, but James, of course, has done that before. He left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Heat in 2010 and then went back in 2014. James would lead the Cavaliers to the NBA championship in 2016 as they stunningly roared back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the 73-9 Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. As Shelburne said, nothing was going to top that.
That wouldn’t quite be the case with the Heat, but James did have a lot of success there. He led them to back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 and was named Finals MVP on both occasions. James won regular-season MVP in those two years as well, and it was quite a dominant stretch. By deciding against going to Miami, he’s keeping those memories as is.
The Heat, though, would have loved to make more memories. They believed they were the best basketball fit for him. James, however, thought the 76ers gave him the best chance of winning another title. He signed a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option for the second year.
The Heat will now shift their focus to the likes of DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal. Whoever they get won’t be anywhere as impactful as James, though. The 22-time All-Star averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025-26.
It will be very interesting to see where the Heat go from here. Sure, they made the biggest move of this offseason by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, but there isn’t enough around him to compete for a championship. While Bam Adebayo is a pretty good second star, and Andrew Wiggins is a quality third option, there isn’t a whole lot else around.
An NBA analyst went as far as to say the Heat might be a play-in team if James doesn’t join. Now Antetokounmpo and Adebayo should be able to lead this group to a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference, but any realistic hopes of contending for a title in 2027 are gone now.
