Remember when Derrick Rose referred to the Knicks as a “super team”? In fact, he seemed to have pretty high expectations from his squad to start the year:
“I mean, with these teams right now, they’re saying us and Golden State are the super teams… And the expectations I think of us, we just want to win…”
Even in September, the notion that the Knicks were a super team was a little bit of a stretch. For some reason, though, we still held a high standard for the new-look Knickerbockers. Most of us imagined Carmelo scoring like a magician, or Rose attacking the rim like a true beast, or Noah patrolling the paint like a tank, or the Unicorn (Kristaps Porzingis) showing flashes of becoming a true star in this league. Most of us didn’t expect an 82-0 season, obviously. But, we expected the Knicks to be something more. A lot of us had dreams of the Knicks being a respectable challenge to the defending champs.
That dream was just that… a dream. A dream that we have long since forgotten, since the Knicks, as they stand now, have finally hit rock bottom.
Where is Derrick Rose?
Let’s start with Derrick Rose. He’s been surprisingly healthy. But he just hasn't lived up to the hype most Knicks fans gave him. Let’s not forget that game against New Orleans, where the guy simply went missing. He downplayed the situation, and evidently returned to the line-up the next game. But he DISAPPEARED! Disappeared, without so much of a phone call to let his team know what was going on. It ended up being some sort of family issue, but why couldn’t he take a time to send a simple text? Maybe the whole situation wouldn’t be such a huge deal if Rose was actually playing like a 20 million dollar man. But of course, that’s not how it played out. The guy that was supposed to bring the Knicks back on the map, has instead helped steer the ship even further away from the prize.
Where is Carmelo Anthony?
What about Mr. Big Shot, Carmelo Anthony? In short, this season has been a disaster for him. His numbers are down in almost all categories this season. While Melo still earns an occasional jaw drop every now and then, when’s the last time we thought “Wow, this guy is really something special”? Off the court, his relationship with the Knicks organization and team President Phil Jackson has taken a straight nose dive. Just a few days ago, the Knicks star had this to say about his relationship with the Knicks:
“If they feel like my time in New York is over, I guess that’s a conversation we should have.”
Doe that sound like a guy who is excited to play with his team? To me, and surely a lot of others, it sounds like quite the opposite. The guy who says that he wants to play the rest of his career in New York now seems to be having doubts about his tenure in the city. And while reports are looming of a possible meeting between Phil and Melo, things don’t look too great right now.
Kristaps Porzingis is the future of the Knicks... but is the future bright for the Knicks?
I could go on about Kristaps Porzingis, and how his body language has looked pretty depressing at times. I could go on about Joakim Noah, and about how he may be the worst starting center in the league. I could go on and on about how nobody associated with the Knicks seems to be showing ANY positive emotions.
But the worst part about this whole thing? There’s no plan B. There’s no backup solution or quick fix to the problem. The New York Knicks are stuck… at least for now, and for the foreseeable future. The Knicks are broken, and the only thing any Knicks fan or player could do is jump off the burning ship before it’s too late.
Who knows, maybe New York gets lucky and finds a way to change their direction. Bigger miracles have happened, after all. But for now, the Knicks are showing us what “Rock Bottom” really looks like. And it doesn’t look pretty.
