LeBron James‘ blockbuster signing with the Philadelphia 76ers has sparked heated debate across the NBA. Former No. 1 overall pick Kwame Brown has joined the chorus of critics, questioning how this partnership will work.
Speaking on a recent livestream, Brown said that LeBron’s arrival will create more problems than solutions and even said the Sixers could become a circus due to the influence around the four-time NBA champion.
His criticism came after LeBron’s longtime agent, Rich Paul, discussed Philadelphia’s plans for next season.
“At the end of the day, this thing with LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers, it looks weird to me now. Yeah, we have a sports agent. I’ve never seen an agent do this. I had a really good agent. I had two really good agents: Mark Bartelstein and Arn Tellem. Arn Tellem was my first agent. Got rid of him and went with Mark Bartelstein.”
“But they would never get on TV or get on camera and discuss basketball in this way. So now that I hear this young man talk, VJ Edgecombe, I think is in trouble. All this ‘don’t listen to people in the media’… he’s laying the groundwork. This is the same thing this gentleman did to Austin Reaves. This guy tried to get Austin Reaves to buy into this and buy into that after the run that he had with LeBron out. You’re trying to get him to buy into a lesser role after having a breakout season. So they’re okay with LeBron holding these other players back in order to get what they want.”
“And it’s going to happen because Philly is Klutch Sports all the way. They got like six or seven players on Philly that are Klutch Sports clients. The GM, the coach… LeBron is going to get what he wants, when he wants. If I’m Jaylen Brown, I ask for a trade because I don’t want to be a part of the circus. They have totally different personalities.”
“In my opinion, Jaylen is straight to the point. He wants to break down the science of whatever problem it is because he’s that type of thinker. I haven’t even met him, but just hearing him speak, you can tell he’s a different type of thinker. LeBron is more jokey, play-around type, gets what he wants because of his influence and power. And so when those two people meet, I wonder what that’s going to be like—a guy that says what’s on his mind whenever he wants, with a guy who will probably sneakily sit behind your back. That’s going to be interesting.”
“But this could be a good thing, or this could be a circus, which I think now, listening to what Rich Paul is saying, I think it’s going to be a circus. Because if I’m VJ Edgecombe and I had the rookie season that I had, I wouldn’t give a Jiminy Cricket that you’re bringing in a 41-, 42-year-old man that’s talking about legacy. I’m thinking about my legacy. I’m thinking that I’m a young, up-and-coming superstar. And if I’m who I think I am, and other people think I am, and I played well enough, why do I have to stunt my growth?”
“That’s a big ask that everyone keeps asking other players to do for LeBron James’ greatness. And my question is, why? When these kids were dreaming and thinking about the league, they weren’t envisioning stunting their growth because of another player.”
“Here’s where the politics start. The mind starts playing tricks on you because all your life, you just wanted to play the game. All your life, you just wanted to be the best you could be. And now you get slapped in the face with the politics of, ‘If you do this, it can help you do this.'”
“Now this young player is faced with a large task because how he handles this situation is going to be pivotal for his career. Rich Paul and LeBron have the ability to destroy this kid if he does not play ball. And in life, a lot of times you’re faced with situations like this where you have to play ball, and you can get in your own way if you don’t believe that this is the way it’s supposed to go. And it’s unfortunate that VJ, Jaylen Brown… because it’s going to be everybody else’s fault now but LeBron’s.”
Brown believes LeBron’s arrival will particularly hinder V.J. Edgecombe’s development.
Edgecombe had an impressive rookie season and was poised to take on an even bigger role next year. However, with LeBron and Jaylen Brown on board, he’s likely to see the ball less often, which could slow his growth.
However, there is another side to that argument.
On the other hand, playing alongside one of the greatest players in NBA history gives Edgecombe a chance to learn from LeBron, gain valuable experience, and compete for championships. His stats may suffer, but the experience he gains could be equally valuable.
Kwame Brown also argued that LeBron’s influence within the organization will continue to grow because Klutch Sports represents four players on Philadelphia’s roster. He even suggested that Jaylen Brown might eventually request a trade after playing alongside LeBron, though there’s currently no indication this scenario is likely.
Jaylen Brown, however, appears excited about his new chapter in Philadelphia and was reportedly one of the players actively recruiting LeBron during free agency.
Brown’s comments come after Rich Paul outlined a different vision for LeBron James with the Sixers.
According to Paul, LeBron is expected to focus on leadership, playmaking, and making the players around him better, a Draymond Green-type role. Paul believes Tyrese Maxey will benefit the most from LeBron’s arrival, while V.J. Edgecombe will learn to become a more efficient player. He also said Jaylen Brown is fully on board with LeBron joining Philadelphia and thinks LeBron’s presence will shield Brown from outside media criticism.
Whether Kwame Brown’s concerns ultimately prove accurate remains to be seen. On paper, the Sixers enter the season with one of the league’s most talented starting lineups, featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and LeBron James.
If those personalities can sacrifice and find chemistry, Philadelphia will have a legitimate chance to compete for a championship. But if that chemistry fails to develop, Brown believes the attention surrounding LeBron could turn the season into a circus and potentially slow the development of Philadelphia’s younger players.
