If anyone has experience changing teams, it’s LeBron James. In all of his summer moves, he made the best of his situation, eventually leading them to at least one championship. This summer, James changed jerseys once again, this time to a team he had no prior experience with: the Philadelphia 76ers.
As much as the stars have tried to accommodate James’ arrival, there are still some growing concerns over how he will adjust to his new surroundings, especially since LeBron is joining an already established core. That’s why, in a recent chat with Barstool, former 76ers guard Patrick Beverley offered some valuable advice to King James on how to best maximize and enjoy his time in the City of Brotherly Love.
“First off, when it comes to Philly, they are a home base that wears their basketball team on their chest,” said Beverley. “They eat, breathe Sixers and Eagles. They eat and breathe. To really enjoy Philadelphia, you have to enjoy Philadelphia. I lived in old city, I lived in Philly. The love I got in Philly was some of the best love I ever experienced in my entire career. The City of Brotherly Love, for real. LeBron, you would appreciate it more living in Philly. Philly is known for having its players’ backs, and they know the game of basketball. It ain’t gonna be the LA vibes; they’re gonna be there for the warmups.”
If anyone knows what it’s like to be a Sixer, it’s Pat. While he didn’t play with the team for very long (just 47 games in the 2023-24 season), he holds his time there in very high regard. Specifically, he cites the fanbase as especially enjoyable, ranking them as the most passionate out of anywhere he’s been.
James saw some of that passion for himself when he was picking his team this summer. Besides a personal call with head coach Nick Nurse, James also heard from various 76ers players, who recruited him hard in the weeks leading up to his announcement. Once it was known where he was going, the whole city responded with levels of hype and excitement that aren’t easily matched.
Still, for LeBron to get the most out of his 76ers tenure, Beverley says he should live in the city, something that LeBron is reportedly on the fence about. Reports indicate he could live in New York during the season and commute to Philadelphia, which is just a short helicopter ride away. This would allow LeBron to enjoy the luxuries of New York while competing for a title. The only catch is that it might inhibit his experience as a Sixer.
At this stage of his career, with his focus entirely on winning a title, LeBron has much to gain from living full-time in Philadelphia. Not only would it maximize his relationship with the city and fans, but it would also help ensure a smooth transition from the Lakers, where he had his entire life set up. At this point, only LeBron can say how far he’s willing to get invested in his new team, but the more he embraces Philly culture, the more it will embrace him right back.
