Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey looks set to be in line for one of the richest contracts in NBA history. Currently, he has a chance to earn a five-year, $389 million supermax contract in 2028 if he meets certain conditions.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, if Maxey somehow earns All-NBA honors in two of the next three seasons, he could become eligible for one of the largest contracts the NBA has ever seen. That could place him among the highest-paid players in the league and add him to the supermax club that features Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown.
Maxey has already taken the first step toward that goal. The 23-year-old earned the first All-NBA selection of his career last season after averaging 28.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.6 assists while shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range. It was a big leap for the former first-round pick, who has become one of the NBA’s best guards.
Despite earning All-NBA honors, Maxey was not eligible for a supermax extension this offseason because he had completed only six NBA seasons. Under the league’s CBA rules, players must have seven years of service to become eligible for a designated veteran supermax contract.
That changes if Maxey earns another All-NBA selection, wins the MVP award, or captures the Defensive Player of the Year award during the 2026-27 season. He would then become eligible in 2027 for a four-year, $301 million extension.
An even larger payday could arrive a year later if Maxey earns All-NBA honors in two of the next three seasons. He would become eligible for a five-year, $389 million supermax extension in 2028 or 2029. That contract would be among the largest in NBA history and would cement Maxey as one of the faces of the 76ers.
But earning another All-NBA selection will not be easy after the 76ers reshaped their roster by adding LeBron James and trading for Jaylen Brown, giving Maxey significantly more star power around him. Joel Embiid is also expected to return, giving the 76ers four players capable of creating their own offense on any given night.
That could create a major challenge for Maxey. While the Sixers’ championship hopes have increased significantly, Maxey’s individual numbers could take a noticeable hit. Last season, he was the primary offensive option with Joel Embiid missing a large chunk of games. This season, however, his touches and shot attempts will almost certainly decline as the offensive burden is shared with Embiid, LeBron, and Brown.
LeBron is expected to embrace more of a playmaking role, according to his agent, Rich Paul. But Maxey will still have fewer opportunities to dominate the ball than he did during his All-NBA campaign.
That doesn’t necessarily eliminate his All-NBA chances. Voters also consider team success, and if the 76ers finish near the top of the Eastern Conference with Maxey continuing to play at an elite level, he could still receive serious consideration. Another All-NBA selection will be difficult, but earning two over the next three seasons will be an even greater challenge.
A second straight All-NBA selection will not only boost the 76ers’ title hopes, but could help Maxey towards a historic payday. If he continues to put in big numbers while helping the Sixers contend for an NBA title, the franchise will have to offer Maxey one of the largest contracts in NBA history.
