The Portland Trail Blazers have been a particularly intriguing franchise to follow this summer. Coming off their first playoff appearance since the 2020-21 season, the team appeared to be on the cusp of becoming a perennial playoff contender. However, internal factors seem to be getting in the way.
From a roster perspective, the Trail Blazers look like a phenomenal team. Given that they boast a backcourt trio of Ja Morant, Damian Lillard, and Jrue Holiday, Portland is in a truly special position. Unfortunately, current issues with the city of Portland regarding the team’s arena may pose a challenge for the team and, subsequently, the fan base.
The Athletic’s Jason Quick reported on this, writing:
“The difference in opinion is widening between the Trail Blazers and the city of Portland as the NBA team’s new ownership looks for public funding to renovate the arena where it plays its games.”
“On Friday, the city of Portland sent the Blazers a term sheet for a 20-year lease agreement. If the Blazers agree to the terms, the team would receive $600 million in public funds to renovate the Moda Center. Of significance, the city is asking the Blazers to pay $3 million annually for a property tax offset, which would escalate over time. Additionally, the deal would require the Blazers to hire union workers and set caps on project-cost overruns.”
Quick noted in his article that both sides were not seeing eye to eye. While the Blazers were explicit in saying that the city council was playing “politics,” Councilor Mitch Green stated that the team’s representatives were “behaving poorly,” emphasizing that the public would demand greater transparency.
Needless to say, such friction doesn’t benefit the city or the franchise. Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon has cultivated a reputation for being a fairly straightforward thinker. On that note, rumors about Dundon’s willingness to relocate the franchise have also gained traction, though the franchise owner has not mentioned anything of the sort.
As the franchise seeks upgrades in a fairly difficult situation, Quick reported that the Blazers have started searching for new arenas. He continued:
“Where those future negotiations are headed remains unclear, but right now each side is digging in, believing they have the leverage.”
“A Blazers source said the team has been examining other recent arena deals in Oklahoma City and Utah, and may start looking for a new deal in Portland, which might even include asking for a new arena in Portland.”
This could be a massive development for the Portland Trail Blazers as a team. As one of the oldest teams in the NBA, the Blazers have developed a close connection to the city of Portland. In this regard, the notion of seeing them relocate would be quite jarring.
Given the current circumstances, exploring alternatives is understandable. But for a loyal fan base like Portland’s, moving the arena to another city may not be favorable. Hence, even amid the current issues, settling on a new arena within the city would be preferable.
In light of the moves the Trail Blazers have made this offseason, it is evident that the team is committed to winning. Overall, finding a way to strike a balance seems ideal, even if it proves challenging.
