Victor Wembanyama has quickly become a household name in the NBA and is widely recognized as the franchise cornerstone of the San Antonio Spurs. However, aside from his professional affiliations with the NBA, Wembanyama is also a representative of the French men’s basketball team.
As one of the most gifted young athletes in the world, Victor Wembanyama already plays a massive role as the Spurs’ leader. At just 22, the big man has already taken San Antonio to the NBA Finals and has ushered in a new era for the franchise. Still, when it comes down to responsibilities, national pride seems to take priority.
The French superstar was recently practicing with the national team ahead of their scheduled FIBA World Cup qualifier games later in the month. However, while touching on the importance of representing his country, Wembanyama explained why donning France’s jersey is tougher than playing for the Spurs.
“It carries more weight because it’s worn over much shorter periods; the intensity of an Olympic Games campaign plays out over a matter of weeks, so it’s all about the here and now,” Wembanyama shared. “There are very few matches in an international career, so every single one really counts.”
As the face of the Spurs’ franchise, Wembanyama shoulders a lot of responsibility. Still, his comments about representing France seem justified. With fewer opportunities, the higher stakes are bound to add more pressure. Given how competitive Wembanyama is known to be, the young star undoubtedly has even greater expectations of himself.
In many ways, this mentality could push Victor Wembanyama to greatness, as the big man has already shown dramatic improvement over the past few years. Thus, with new opportunities to help his team, the 22-year-old will contribute in every way he can.
Currently, Wembanyama and the French national team are scheduled to face off against Slovenia on August 27 in the second phase of the qualifying rounds. The French center shared a comment on this upcoming matchup, stating:
“It’s gonna be great. I’m eager to see how the public has evolved, because we know that it’s a growing sport, especially in France. And as you said, it’s been a long time since I have worn this jersey in front of the public.”
“For my case and as for many others in the team, it’s about getting to know the staff, discovering new teammates, and laying the groundwork. To me, it’s doable. Even the upcoming summers would be doable without it, but it’s better to start now.”
As Victor Wembanyama noted, the upcoming games will mark the first time he will wear the French national team jersey since the Paris Olympics in 2024. Given that his team came up short against the USA men’s team in the Gold Medal game, the Spurs’ superstar will aim for a stronger performance to help the French team win.
At this juncture, France sits atop the table in Group L with a 5-1 record, placing them in a solid position to move on to the next stage. Even without Victor Wembanyama, France has dominated, owing to some solid performances from Maxime Raynaud, Elie Okobo, and Rudy Gobert. With the superstar in the lineup, there is no telling how much more competitive the French national team could become.
Before the qualifier games, France will also face Serbia in two exhibition games on August 20 and August 23. While these matchups won’t count toward the team’s official record, it will certainly be a positive way for Victor Wembanyama to find his footing with his teammates.
