The 2nd round of the NBA draft is a really hit or miss thing. Most players never see much time, struggle and ultimately, never pan out to what they would have wanted to be.
However, there are players that once they get the opportunity, they will role with it and show everyone why they should have been a top 5 pick. Scoring in the 2nd round is like finding a diamond in the rough, someone you should never let go. So here are my top 5 2nd round picks in the NBA.
5. DeAndre Jordan
The 35th pick in the 2008 NBA draft, Jordan has gone from an athletic freak to an athletic freak who just so happens to be really good at defense. This season Jordan is averaging around 12 points 13 rebounds 2 blocks, all while shooting 69% percent from the field—he even has his free throw percentage to above 50% (okay so he’s at 50.5% but it is above 50). Jordan is a great pick and roll guy catches lobs easily and is the anchor of the Clippers defense.
He has been an All-NBA caliber Defender and was named a first-time All-Star this season.
4. Hassan Whiteside
The 33rd pick back in 2010, Whiteside didn’t have the greatest start to his NBA career, leaving the league after two years with Kings. After 2 years Whiteside came back to the Heat and played out of his mind, and he has been consistent ever since. Whiteside became the first player in NBA history to go from making the NBA minimum salary to making the NBA maximum, and he has deserved every penny of it.
This season Whiteside is averaging 17 points 14 rebounds and 2 blocks while shooting about 55% percent from the field and the free throw line. While the Heat are under .500 in terms of win percentage, he has lead the Heat to a 12-game winning streak (which has never been done before). He wasn’t named an All-Star, he is a great all round center in the league.
3. Marc Gasol
The 48th pick in the 2007 draft by the Lakers, used as a piece to get his older brother Pau, Marc has been one of the best centers in the League (2nd to DeMarcus in my book). This season, Gasol was named an All-Star, averaging: 20 points 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1.5 blocks, shooting 47% from the field, amazingly shooting 40.4% from 3, and 84.2% from the free throw line.
This guy can do it all. He is a multiple time all-star, a defensive player of the year, and an all-NBA talent. The Grizzlies have been playing will, and this guy has been a big reason for it.
2. Isaiah Thomas
The last pick in the 2011 NBA, Thomas has been destroying the League (especially in the 4th quarter). Even when he was on the Kings, Thomas showed promise, averaging around 20 points per game. He had that brief stint with the Suns that didn’t go so well, but ever since he has come to Boston, he has been one of the best guards in the league. Thomas is Averaging 29.8 points per game this season (2nd in the NBA) 6 assists, shooting 46% from the field and over 90% from the line.
For a guy that is only 5’ 9”, the last pick in the NBA he is showing everyone just how big of a mistake they made passing him up. Another interesting fact, he has more career points than every other 60thpick put together.
1. Draymond Green
The 35th pick by the Warriors in 2012, Green has been the vocal leader for the team and does just about everything for the team. This season Green is averaging 10 points 8 rebounds 7 assists 2 steals and 1 block. This man is a jack of all trades, he can do everything, score, defend, pass, rebound, just everything.
He has been an All-Star, an All-NBA talent, a runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, and an NBA champion. This guy can do it all, and that is what makes him the best 2nd round pick in the NBA.
